Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! With the exception of a hot, muggy, east wind day on Thursday, we should have just enough wind through at least Sunday for you to escape the heat by playing in the river. Yay. Read on for the details…

Is this feeling helpful? If so, go ahead and make a contribution using Paypal to support it. Send $19.99 or more, and I’ll send the forecast to your inbox for a year.

Wednesday kicks off cloudy in the metro area and sunny in the Gorge. Early pressures were 30.04/30.01/29.99 for gradients of 0.03 and 0.02. Models don’t call for all that much wind today, but the heavy cloud cover in the metro area may allow the thermals to over-perform. In other words, we might get lucky and get 2-4mph more than the forecast in the rest of this paragraph. Maybe. Depends on how long those clouds decide to stick around. Early wind was 5-10 everywhere except Viento (20mph – but it reads high). Models generally call for 13-16 from Stevenson to Swell starting mid-morning. Hood River: probably 10-13, but maybe 13-16. Mosier (please don’t – it’s still in a Level 2/3 fire evac zone) should be in the 11-14 range from late morning on. The Lyle-Doug’s stretch joins late afternoon at 11-14. I wouldn’t be surprised, and neither should you, if the executive session (>5pm) rises to 16-19 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River. River flow over the last 24 hours was 89-146kcfs, river temp is 70.34F, and high temp forecast is 88F.

Hotter, muggier, less windy weather is in the cards for Thursday. The days starts with light east flow. Easterlies pick up to 15-18mph near Stevenson for a few hours mid-morning. Iwash and Viento: 12-15mph. Elsewhere: light easterly. The wind turns calm everywhere in the afternoon as temps push towards 100F. Evening wind turns around and rises to W 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Venmo

A weak system moves in Thursday night, drops the pressure in the desert, and allows high pressure to somewhat rebound over the Pacific. Expect dawn patrol at 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood river with 17-20 at Mosier. This system triggers instability, and this disrupts the wind west of Mosier. Well, it’ll disrupt it everywhere, but it’ll shift the strongest wind east. You’ll find 16-19 from Stevenson to Swell and gusty 20-23 form Mosier to Doug’s from late morning on. Afternoon: gusty 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus with gusty 18-21 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of Rufus, the wind stays below 15mph. High temp: 94F and muggy with a chance of thunder.

Extended: The system causes more disruption on Saturday. Models currently call for a strong dawn patrol followed by gusty 20ish mph for the rest of the day. Sunday’s forecast is currently somewhere around 15mph, but that’s likely to change as we get closer and I refine the forecast. Beyond that: west wind appears to stick around, but there’s enough range in the models that it’s impossible to be precise about wind speeds. Stay cool over the next few days!
