Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A hot and easterly day on Wednesday gives way to a string of gusty west wind days. In that string, day one carries a decent chance of thunder and lightning, making the wind even more difficult to predict!

For Wednesday, easterlies will be in the 15-20 range at Rooster and Stevenson early with 10-15 near Viento. They won’t last long; the wind turns light and variable by the afternoon. It’ll be a good day to grab any sort of floating object and head to the river – temps climb near 100 this afternoon, making this possibly the hottest day of the year.

A low pressure system moves offshore late Wednesday into Thursday, setting up upper level south flow, instability, and a good chance of lighting. Models do suggest a weak marine push to the west with a heat low in the desert, ostensibly a decent setup for wind. A disturbance moves through in the morning, adding some oomph to instability and messing up the wind. So… early morning wind at 11-14 from Stevenson to Arlington. If there weren’t a chance of storms, this would be the forecast: 11-14 all day in the west with gusty 20-23 from Rowena to Arlington in the afternoon. Given that lightning chances will be highest east of the Cascade Crest in the afternoon, there’s probably not a lot of benefit to driving.

While the low pressure will still be offshore on Friday morning, it’ll be heading northwards. Marine clouds push at least as far as Underwood, and a heat low stays in the desert. This sets the morning up for 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 18-22 east of there. Eastern Gorge wind drops to 10-13 by the afternoon, and Stevenson to The Dalles picks up to gusty 20-23 ahead of an approaching weak system. Models aren’t quite in agreement about the weekend. Westerlies look “moderate” on Saturday and Monday and a bit lighter on Sunday. That could easily change between now and then.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Wednesday: SW5-10/SW10-15/S15-20, NW swell 4′ at 7 seconds. Thursday: S15-20/SW10-15/S10-15, W 3′ @ 8. Friday: SW5-10/LTW/LTV, W 2′ @ 9. Jones Wednesday:12-14. Thursday: 11-14. Friday: nope. Sauvie’s Wednesday through Friday: nope, nope, nothin’.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Today will be a hot and dry day, but there’s a chance of thunder tonight. Temps will be in the mid 50’s (open windows) early and near 100 later (closed windows, duh). Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks muggy with high clouds and a chance of thunder and lightning all day. Rain is unlikely. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and mid 80’s later. AC kind of day. Moderate west wind. 0.5% chance of rainbows. Fire weather watch in effect for lightning. Friday starts with marine clouds and ends clear. Temps will be near 60 early and in the mid 80’s later. Muggy. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

For road bikers: chip seal along Highway 30 from Mosier eastward just had a layer of sticky oil added to the top. Reports are that it could use some time to cure before it’s good for biking. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community activities include swimming – meet at Dirty Fingers at 5:30 for a women’s ride to the beach rather than a women’s ride in Post.
