Wednesday. Happy poleboarders and tangleboarders. =)

It’s another windy day in a long windy streak here in the Gorge. Gradients this morning are down over the last few days, but don’t you worry your little self. It’ll still be plenty windy today, and it’ll be windy in enough places that the not-crowds might spread out a bit. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).
Sauvie’s n’ Jones Beta Test Forecast

At 6am, we were at .13 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc) and .38 (eph-dls). That’s still enough gradient for Dawn Patrol at 24-27 at Swell with 13-16 pretty much everywhere else except Arlington. Expect the wind to build to 26-30 from Swell to Mosier this morning. Models suggest we’ll see the wind back off midday as Portland heats up (and the lack of marine clouds seem to confirm this). So, let’s have a midday lull to the 21-24 range from Stevenson to Doug’s, followed by an afternoon pick-me-up at 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus and a little less at Arlington.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones: 21-24. Sauvie’s: 8-12.

Tomorrow morning starts off with 13-16 from Swell to Mosier. As an upper level low approaches BC and a front slides over Washington, we’ll see the gradients pick up. There’s no guarantee we’ll see additional wind with this setup. The most likely scenario is a brief jump to 23-26 at Swell from, oh, noon to 2pm or so, followed by a die-off there and 24-28 at Stevenson, Avery and Arlington with gusty 19-23 everywhere else.

As these weather systems clear the area of influence on Friday, we’ll start with 10-13 pretty much everywhere. Late in the afternoon, we’ll see a jump to gusty 22-25 at most locations, possibly excepting Stevenson which may be in the clouds.

For those of you asking about the weekend, it’s really too early to make a call, so I’ll make a call anyway, and then it can change and you can tell me I was wrong and I can say that I told you it would change! Models suggest high pressure and warmer weather with W 10-13 on Saturday and W 15-18 Sunday afternoon, but I would place money on that changing. Not a lot of money, but some, perhaps the $20 bill lying on the floor next to my desk.

Out on the coast, you get this (north/central/south): 5-10/15-20/25-30, SW swell 1′ @ 14 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/10-15/20-25, SW 2 @ 13. Friday: 5-10/10-15/20-25, SW 2 @ 12.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was sitting at my table this morning returning emails related to some volunteer stuff I do, and I noticed I had a s***-eating grin on my face and a happy warm feeling in my chest. Can you think of something in your world that fires up such a strong happy reaction? Maybe it’s your kids or your dog or your job or the art you create or perfect dirt or waves.

Anyway, I notice that when one thing (like Anson’s Bike Buddies) makes me feel that happy, the happiness spreads to everything else that’s going on in my world. For example, I have meetings in Portland all day. They’re good meetings, but still, I’m missing wind. And that’s okay, cuz I started off my day working towards getting bikes to kids who can’t afford to buy bikes.

So… I dunno how our minds work. But it seems to me that if, when we’re feeling crappy/frustrated/etc, we can pull up those things that make us super happy and really feel into them, we’ll feel better overall. We might even see a new way of dealing with the crappy thing. Now, get out there an enjoy another awesome Gorge day! #suckfactorzero #unicornsandrainbows

Gorge Weather Forecast

I see one high cloud outside my window right now, and other than that, it’s clear and sunny. Expect sun today with temps in the upper 50’s early and upper 70’s this afternoon. Strong wind, no rainbows. Tomorrow looks nearly identical: temps in the mid 50’s early, upper 70’s in the afternoon, moderate wind early, strong wind later, and no rainbows. Friday looks partly cloudy as a weather system moves through. We’ll have temps in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late, .5% chance of rainbows. The weekend looks warm and sunny.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s not much to talk about in dirt world: it’s dry out there and everything is open. In road biking news, it looks rather windy for the next three days, and the new pavement on McCurdy Farms Hill is still AMAZEBALLS. In race news, 12 Hours of Post and the Oregon Enduro are in Post Canyon this weekend, so all the other trails will be relatively people-free.

You’ve been in the river all day playing like a fish. You’re hungry. You want sushi. Hit up Sushi Okalani’s happy hour, Mon-Fri 5-6pm, and Sunday 5pm-9:30. You’ll find $5 rolls, specials on sake and beer, and edamame. You’ll also find a new chef who’s serving up specials like Korean brisket & seared scallops with a ginger-cream sauce and avo-wasabi puree. You can get sushi to go, and you can get to-go sake with that sushi. No open container law in HR means you can have a sushi-sake picnic. Yay!

Upcoming Events

This evening is busy – at 5:30, there’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot ride at Dirty Fingers, earning you a glass of wine for riding for a couple hours. There’s Families at Family Man, for kids n’ parents with bikes, there’s a whitewater paddle on the White Salmon leaving from Husum – the river’s around 1.9 feet – there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory and half an hour later, there’s sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina.

This weekend is the Oregon Enduro race in Post Canyon, with a heckle party at the Mitchell Ridge Berms whichever day they race them – the course hasn’t been released yet. Wear a costume to the heckle party. After the race on Saturday, swing by Dirty Fingers for their anniversary party, themed black tie, leather and/or toga. Saturday is the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon (benefiting the WS Cross Country team – free, suggested donation of $20) and the Wheatacres Ranch Trail Challenge along with 12 Hours of Post.

The last weekend in June is the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button.

Have an awesome day today!
