Wednesday: Happy 4th of July!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

High overcast sky isn’t usually a sign of strong wind, but today is an exception, at least for those of you up for some east wind playtime. Rooster Rock will have 25-30 until late morning. Stevenson to Viento will have 16-19 with a period of 20-25 likely near Stevenson. The wind will die off after noon, dropping to E 5-10 by 2pm. We’ll see light wind near Hood River all day, but the easterlies will pick up to 10-15 east of The Dalles this afternoon. Sometime after 5pm, we’ll see a switch to light westerlies (5-10 or so) from Stevenson to Hood River. That west wind will build overnight.

Thursday starts with W 14-17 from Viento to The Dalles with 10-13 at Stevenson and 5-10 or less farther east. A trough of low pressure along the coast will limit the cross-Cascade gradients, but desert heat will help out in the afternoon. We’ll see gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with 25-28 possible near Doug’s.

That coastal low moves north towards Vancouver Island during the day on Friday, sending cool air into Portland and allowing a high off Cali to build northward. Late in the afternoon, hot air moves into the Columbia Basin, forming a heat low. If this all works out right, it’s going to be very windy late in the day. So, Friday starts with 5-10 in the west and 13-16 east of Mosier. We’ll see a slow build to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles by noon. All that previously mentioned ‘stuff’ happens after 2pm, causing the wind to jump (if the forecast holds!) to 28-32+ from Stevenson to Arlington, holding until dark.

Models disagree on the strength of this weekend’s wind, with the GFS keeping things light and the ECMWF holding the Gorge in the upper teens to low 20’s. With run-to-run consistency in the ‘not great’ category, weekend predictions aren’t really possible at this time.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 13-16. Thursday: 15-18. Friday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 7-10. Thursday: 10-13. Friday: X. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: SW10/X/X, NW swell 3′ at 8 seconds. Thursday: X/X/S10, NW 2′ @ 8. Friday: S20/S20/S5, W 2′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things I’ve thought about with depression is that it often seems to be sign that we’re troubled by something we can’t work out on our own. Sure, sometimes that thing will resolve pretty quickly, but sometimes it won’t. More stressors will layer atop the original one, deepening the depression and associated sense of confusion and hopelessness.

Talking can help. Unfortunately, our society has some darn fierce stigma associated with mental health issues in general and depression more specifically. Shame around feelings keeps us from talking about them, and that keeps us trapped. A nasty-feeling feeling (shame) keeps us from doing the thing that’s most likely to help (talking)!

Give it a shot next time you are feeling down. Talk to someone who cares about the things that are troubling you. Or better yet, talk about the depression you’re feeling, because depression can be a sign that we don’t know what’s troubling us! Talking about it can help sort out the confusion. And if you don’t feel comfortable talking to a known person, call a crisis line or a counselor. Those folks love to listen. May you be surrounded by people who care. Have an awesome day.

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

High clouds moved in earlier than anticipated, so we’ll have a high overcast day on the hill. Free air freezing level (FAF): 12,000′, slowly rising to 14,000′. Wind: SE 25, slowly fading to SE 10 after midnight. Thursday looks clear. FAF: 14,000′. Wind: SE 10, becoming S 15 in the afternoon and S 25 after midnight. Friday: partly cloudy. FAF: 13,000′. Gorge Weather Forecast

It appears to be high overcast, and thus shall it stay. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and near 90 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Friday looks clear or partly cloudy, with mid-level clouds likely in the afternoon. Temps will be near 60 early and in the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate west wind becomes very strong in the afternoon. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. I received a report from Dirty Fingers that multiple known people have ridden Gunsight. Hospital Hill now seems to be a one-tick-bite-per-ride zone. That’s for humans, not for dogs, which are currently allowed, by the way. The now-open Borderline (133) trail in Post has 1-3” dust on it. SAD! We are at Fire Level 2 now, which means motos on Hood River County land are only allowed in Post Canyon. Middle Mountain and Pinemont are closed to motorized use until the fire level drops. HRATS has a brush clearing party Saturday. Meet at 9am at Family Man.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the annual Kollas Cranmer run from Odell to Hood River. There’s free yoga at 9 today at Lewis and Clark park in The Dalles. Coming up tomorrow evening, Cascade Locks has community sailing night with free sailboat rides, low-cost lessons for kids, and a BBQ. I was a little confused about the dates of the County trails and parks focus groups. Those are July 5th and July 19th, 6pm, 601 State Street.

Coming up Saturday, Trout Lake has the Wild Woman trail 50k and relay, for women only. The Hood River Area Trail Stewards have a work party to cut back brush. That’s meeting at Family Man in Post Canyon at 9. Big Winds has free demos of Cabrinha Drifter Kites from 11-4 Saturday, and Northwave has a free jibing and rigging clinic with Jim, Oakes, the looping grandpa, at 9am. Hopefully there will be free coffee and donuts at that one. Pacific Hermitage has a garden party and after-party tea party this Saturday. Potluck meal at 11 (be there by 10:45), work party at 1ish, tea at 3ish.

Have an awesome day today!
