Gorge Wind Forecast
Good morning, everyone! Models are optimistic on you getting wind of some sort in the eastern Gorge today. Thank a low sliding inland just north of the Columbia (yesterday’s forecast had it directly over the river) for the wind. After today, the next best chance comes early next week; ensembles are somewhat optimistic about wind next Monday through next Wednesday, but there’s also a fair bit of uncertainty present.
Let’s look at today. It’s Wednesday, and the setup is decent for gusty fall westerlies. We have a compact low moving inland with offshore high pressure building behind it. That’s spot-on fall pattern. We’ll start with pressures of 29.86/29.92/29.91 for east 0.06/W0.01. As the low moves inland, the wind turns around. We’ll see gusty westerlies at 15-25 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Mosier as the low shifts eastward. East of Hood River, probably form Lyle to Boardman, we’ll have gusty 24-28. It’s possible the wind could exceed this thanks to synoptic-scale assistance (the big picture, essentially), but this all really depends on how quickly the low falls apart. Move quickly and consider driving pre-emptively; the wind will pick up quickly and then it will fade late afternoon. River flow yesterday was 57-80kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is 61F. Sunset is around 7pm. Amayah’s Indian Cafe in Biggs is open until 9pm most nights.
Thursday starts light and variable. Models disagree on wind speeds. Some keep the western Gorge under 10mph, and some give us 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier. Eastern Gorge wind, east of The Dalles, picks up to 10-13 or perhaps 13-16 in the afternoon. High temp: 62F.
Models are all over the place with rain chances on Friday which messes with the wind forecast. Kinda. At this point, we’re looking at calm wind in the morning with afternoon easterlies at 15-20 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson and 10-15 at Viento. High temp: 61F. Saturday: 13-16. Sunday: light/variable. Monday: low to mid 20’s east of The Dalles, maybe. About 50% of the ensembles are on board. Same for Tuesday and Wednesday – some of the ensembles are on board, but there’s a lot of uncertainty. Have a great day today, and get some for me. I’m working all day. You have fun!

Thursday will be cloudy then partly cloudy then high overcast. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the low 60’s. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Friday might be rainy and it might not, but it will be cloudy. Decent chance of a colorful sunset. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise to the low 60’s. Calm wind. 50-50 chance of rainbows.

The Post Canyon AirJam is September 30th at Extended Play.
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.
Cycling
As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. No official word yet on Whoopdee and Underwood. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
