Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

The Forecast

Mt. Hood Forecast

Clear sky and sunshine greets another fine day on the slopes of Mt. Hood. Sun sticks around all day Wednesday and Thursday. Snow returns starting Friday and sticks around through Saturday evening. Deets for Wednesday: sunshine all day! The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning and 10,000′ in the afternoon and evening with 5000′ temps rising to the upper 30’s. Wind: light S or light SE building to SW 10-20 overnight.

Thursday will be sunny and warm with slope-side temps approaching 40 degrees. Free air freezing level: 10,000′ all day and evening falling to 5000′ overnight. Wind: SW 10-20 all day turning to SSW 15-30 overnight.

Clouds move in on the wee hours of Friday morning. A system moves in during the day, but models disagree on both the timing and the intensity. For now, let’s say the snow level will be 5000′ early and will fall to about 4000′ by midday. Up to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day, for 2-3” of new snow. Up to 0.8” WE (models really disagree here) falls overnight, for up to 6-8” of new. Wind: SW 10-25 early, SSW 15-30 in the afternoon, SW 20-45 overnight.

Saturday brings light snowfall that tapers off in the afternoon. The snow level will be 4000′ early. It falls to 2500′ in the afternoon and evening after the bulk of the precip is gone. About 0.3” WE falls during the day, for 3” of regular old Cascade snow. Another 0.3” of lighter snow falls in the evening. Wind: SW 20-45 early, WNW 50 (affecting lift speeds) in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. Sunday looks clear with the freezing level around 2000′. Sounds like a fun weekend on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
