Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a glorious, sunny Wednesday on the slopes with the most perfect packed powder groom you can imagine. Get it early. Temps will skyrocket this afternoon and turn the snow to sticky mush. We then look at a warm and probably sticky day on Thursday (corn hasn’t had time to develop) followed by cooler, windy, snowy weather all the way through Sunday. The snow level could dip as low as 0-500′ on Sunday!

Looking at Wednesday, it’s clear and cold. Teacup reports 12F and perfect packed powder conditions. Temps are right around 20F at Meadows and Timberline. We’ll add some thin high clouds in the afternoon, but probably not enough to dampen the sunshine. The free air freezing level (FAF) goes from 0′ this morning to 9000′ this afternoon to 11,000′ overnight. Temps max out in the low 40’s during the time lifts are running and may climb into the 50’s tonight. Wind: calm this morning becoming SE 10-20 midday and SW 5-15 in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday starts clear and turns high overcast. The FAF will be 11,000′ all day. No precip. Wind: SW 5-15 all day becoming W 35 after midnight. A cold front swings through on Friday and takes the snow level from 11,000′ prior to sunrise to 4000′ at daybreak, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′-1500′ after midnight. About 0.1” water equivalent is forecast during the day. That could start as rain, but will quickly switch to snow for 1/2” to 1” new. Another 0.1” to 0.2” WE is expected overnight for 1-3” powder. Wind: W 35 or thereabouts all day long. After midnight, the wind becomes NW 30-40.

Models currently suggest a snowy day on Saturday with the snow level around 1500′ in the morning and 0′ Saturday night. Up to 0.8” WE is currently forecast for Mt. Hood in that 24 hour time period. We’ll see if that holds… models tend to be overly enthusiastic with precip this time of year. It’ll also be windy on Saturday with NW wind in the 30-40 range all day. Cooler, showery weather continues on Sunday. Winter is back, yay!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies stick around for a couple of days thanks to inland high pressure. We then shift into a cooler onshore flow system for a few days of westerlies, showers, perhaps some snow, and chilly. Temps. Wednesday starts with easterlies at 30mph near Rooster, 15mph near Viento, and variable wind at Stevenson. The wind picks up to 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento with 25-30 near Rooster all day. East of Viento, the wind picks up to 5-10mph out of the east. River flow is 157kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 60F.

Easterlies continue on Thursday. They start with 35-40 at Rooster and 25-30 at Stevenson with calm wind east of Viento. Afternoon: 20-25 at Rooster, 15-20 at Stevenson, 5-10 east of Viento. High temp: blissfully warm at 68F. Friday sees a weak cold front swing through. This stats our day with gusty 15-18 in the western Gorge with 24-27 from The Dalles to Boardman. Afternoon wind builds to 28-33 from The Dalles to Boardman and falls to 10-13 with drizzle or showers west of The Dalles. Saturday’s max wind looks like 28-33, but only late in the day. Sunday’s forecast is currently for unseasonably cold weather with westerlies in the teens.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

Most of the trails are too wet to ride. Those that weren’t have probably experienced freezing temps overnight. Remember the rule: if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing or exposed to the open air now, don’t ride it. You’ll do significant damage. Just wait until tomorrow. It’s not far away! If you ride in the mud, you not only mess up your bike, you do significant damage to the trails. Your brown pow is coming. Go shred the mountain until the trails dry out! Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
