Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!
Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
The incoming cold pool has created some strong east wind this morning, and that’s driving upslope light snowfall on the mountain along with some fog. Or it was. That dissipated, and now the cold, dry continental air has cleared the sky. There is a chance of light snowfall (no accumulation) tonight. The snow level will be at the surface all day long. Wind will be E 20 all day, most likely, although that really depends on the depth of the cold pool.
Thursday starts off with clouds. Snow moves in around 4pm. The snow level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps in the mid 20’s early and the upper 20’s to low 30’s after midnight. The mountain will see .5” water value (WV) between 4pm Thursday and 4am Friday, for 3-5” of dense snow.
Friday sees the snow level climb somewhere between 5500′ and 6500′, depending on how quickly the incoming system scours out the cold continental air. That makes for a tricky forecast. We’ll see .4” WV between 4am and 4pm, and I suspect that will fall as a mix of rain and snow, for a couple inches of new at best. Between 4pm Friday and 4am Saturday, another band of relatively warm precip moves in, for .6-1.0” WV of what will probably be rain but may be very wet snow. Accumulation is impossible to predict at this time. Little to none, and what does come in will be heavy like mashed potatoes. Wind on Friday will be SW 25 in the morning, SW 35 in the afternoon, and WSW 45-50 after midnight.
Saturday looks cooler and snowy. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, rising to 4500′ after midnight. We’ll see .6” WV during the day, for 6-7” of new snow. We’ll see another .3-.4” WV overnight, for another 3-4” of snow. Looks like the wind will be SW 30ish or so all day. Sunday currently looks warm but not all that wet, but the storm track could change, so let’s wait and see.
Gorge Wind Forecast
East wind at 35 on Wednesday morning rises to E 60 on Wednesday afternoon. Expect E 60-70 on Thursday. Friday starts with E 50-60 and drops off to 40-50 in the afternoon, still impacting the Portland metro area. As a low slides up the coast, the wind should turn light westerly, but only near Rooster, after midnight. The rest of the Gorge sees calm wind.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m struggling with a loss right now. As we’re all aware, loss can be painful, especially when it involves a either-or choice. When we make such a choice, we can find ourselves struggling with buyer’s remorse or discarder’s remorse. We ask ourselves, “Am I doing the right thing?”
Even if you write down lists of pros and cons, you’ll almost always find good reasons for going one way and good reasons for heading another way. These good reasons can cause even more confusion.
There’s a major thinking error happening when we do this. The truth is that difficult decisions are almost never as clean cut as right/wrong or good/bad. We can’t ever really know if we are making the “right” choice or “wrong” choice – humans are just too complex for such simplicity. And this is why those choices are so difficult – along with the possibilities of one choice, we must mourn what’s lost by making that choice.
Unfortunately, the only way out of the pain is to accept that you’ve done the best you can with one choice and process the loss. Questioning and regretting are just mental chatter than keeps you from moving on. May your choices be as filled with ease as possible. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s cloudy out there this morning and already sub-freezing. At least it’s warm – 30 degrees down here but 6 degrees at Meadows. Expect the temp to drop into the upper 20’s today. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks cold. Temps will be in the low to mid 20’s, unless you find clear sky above you. Then expect single digits. NUKING east wind. No rainbows. Snow starts up around 5:30pm, dropping a few inches overnight. Friday looks snowy with temps in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s in the afternoon (not buying that high temp forecast, actually). We’ll see a couple inches of snow follow by freezing rain in the evening. Expect another 1/4-1/4” of freezing rain Saturday. Will we warm above freezing on Saturday? I sure hope so, because there’s a lot of moisture headed this way. The strongest indication of above-freezing weather is on Monday, but even then, it’s 33 degrees.
