Wednesday: easterlies, westerlies, and thunder chances

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

High pressure builds briefly over the inland Northwest today, Wednesday, ahead of a change in the weather due to a series of weather systems. Wednesday and Thursday look more like fishing weather than Wind Johnnie weather, but the Friday through Sunday stretch has models agreeing on stronger westerlies.

For Wednesday, high pressure building inland isn’t quite the scenario we want for westerlies; however, enough temperature gradient remains this afternoon to keep wind flowing (despite model forecasts of calm wind). Pre-dawn gradients were .06 and .02. Stay close to home – Viento to Swell starts the day with 12-15 or so and hang on to that. The forecast is 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier by late morning. It is possible we’ll see a midday lull that drops the wind below 10mph, but it should return in the evening. River flow is 69,200cfs (LOW) and temp is 70 degrees.

Low pressure moves inland from the southwest along a northeast track on Thursday. Ahead of this low, east wind blows: 10-15 early at Rooster to Viento, rising to 20-25 midday, and dropping to calm conditions after 2pm. Lightning and thunder are possible from midday on.

Thunder, lightning, and rain chances continue on Friday, making this forecast totally unreliable. The wind will be gusty, and it might die off completely if there are storms. That said, the gradients point to 20-23 form Mosier to The Dalles early (11-14 west of there). Afternoon wind looks like gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus. That all assumes thunderstorms don’t materialize and shut the Gorge down.

Now, let’s look at the weekend. Get out early for fishing on Saturday – morning wind will be 8-11 for a couple of hours. Models have the wind climbing to 27-31+ late afternoon from Viento to The Dalles with Rufus joining late. Clouds fill the western Gorge Sunday and shift the wind eastward. We’re a long ways out, but the GFS and ECMWF both like 30-35.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Wednesday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, NW swell 6′ at 14 seconds. Thursday: NW5-10/LTNW/LTS, NW 5′ @ 12 – surfing weather! Friday: LTW/LTW/N10-15, NW swell 4′ @ 10. Jones Wednesday: 5-10. Thursday: nope. Friday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 11-14. Thursday and Friday: nope.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky Wednesday morning stays that way. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s later. Muggy. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday looks cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms, especially to the south. Temps will be near 60 early and in the low to mid 80’ls later. Surprisingly not muggy. East wind. 0.21% chance of rainbows. Friday brings low clouds and high clouds to start and ends mostly clear. Chance of thunder and rain in the morning. Temps will be in the mid 60’s (or warmer) early and near 80 in the afternoon. Muggy as muggy muggy. Moderate westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Approximately 0.2” of rain fell last Thursday, meaning some of our trails have been refreshed. Next chance of rain: late Thursday into Friday. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with a by-donation yoga class at 10am at the Fish Food Bank in Hood River. The all-levels, no-drop women’s mountain bike ride leaves Dirty Fingers Bike Shop at 5:30, and there’s free all-ages music outdoors at Bargeway Pub in The Dalles at 7.

The Huckleberry Festival kicks off Friday and continues all weekend in Bingen. Friday also happens to be first Friday in Hood River.
