Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday’s dry and not-noticeable cold front carried a little more oomph than expected. You saw the clouds that moved in and felt the cooler air and experienced that afternoon drop in the wind in the west. We’ll be in a more stable weather environment for the next few days. That should give us more reliable wind through Saturday, at least. Models start to diverge on Sunday. Don’t forget the swap meet on Sunday! Also, all the poopy water areas have re-tested as “normal”, but the current is still quite strong out there, and the flow is still too much for good waves near Rufus.
Let’s look at Wednesday. A deep marine layer settled in west of Hood River last night, and scattered marine clouds pushed past town. It’ll take a bit of time for the clouds to burn back and the wind to fill in. For the morning, expect 11-14 most places with 7-10 at Stevenson and leftover, post-frontal 14-17 at Arlington. Don’t drive way out east. The wind will shift westward today. By early afternoon, we’ll have 19-22 from Hood River to Rufus with 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell. Mid-afternoon brings 21-24 from Viento to Rufus with 12-15 at Stevenson and light/variable wind to the east of Rufus. River flow is 356-376kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 75F. Nice day for sure!
Thursday sees less marine clouds and consequently less wind. The day starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge. By midday, you can expect 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier with light/variable wind to the east. Afternoon: 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles with variable wind east of there. High temp: 82F.
Leftover heat in the desert gives the wind a head start on Friday, and the warm start gives the desert heat low more power in the afternoon. Dawn Patrol will be 23-26 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 to The Dalles and 11-14 out east. Midday: 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 in the eastern Gorge. Models suggest the wind will dip a bit but expand its presence in the afternoon: 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington.
Saturday’s forecast currently predicts 25-29, but instability could throw a wrench into that. Sunday shows quite a bit of spread – the deterministic model suggests 24-27, but that’s far from guaranteed. Less wind is forecast for Monday. All-in-all, that’s a good stretch of wind for this week and for the holiday weekend. Enjoy!

Coming up this weekend, it’s the CGW2 swap meet at Lot 1 on Sunday. On Saturday, Pacific Hermitage has a garden party and potluck.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
