Gorge Wind Forecast
The next few days contain a series of weather systems that will make things feel a lot more like early spring than early summer. Atmospheric dynamics will make the wind prediction tricky. That said, predicted gradients are indicative of strong westerlies the next three days, assuming you are in the right place at the right time. That’s the tricky part!
For Wednesday, a cold front moves in and through the region followed by a larger area of low pressure that settles over the Northwest. Gradients and wind start out light in response to the approaching low. As it moves into Vancouver Island, the wind will pick up. Expect 15-18 by late morning from Stevenson to Mosier. After that, clouds and showers move into the western Gorge. It does look like the wind will hold, despite the overhead gloom: gusty 20-24 from Viento to Mosier. Rain in Stevenson will make the wind a moot point. From Rowena to Arlington, afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 25-29. River flow is 278kcfs and temp is 59 degrees.
Low pressure sits overhead with accompanying clouds on Thursday. Another front approaches, and offshore high pressure builds as the day goes on. This is another one of those days where “right place, right time” is the key to getting the wind. Westerlies start at 10-13 through the entire Gorge. If you believe the models, the wind will pick up dramatically starting around noon. Afternoon westerlies: 26-29 from Hood River to Arlington with gusty 18-23 in the rainy western Gorge. Models also like the idea of a late afternoon bump to 28-33 from Rufus to Threemile.
Friday’s weather continues on the same track: windy. However, instability is added to the mix, meaning thunderstorms could mess it all up. In addition, it’ll be chilly – the snow level will be down to 3500′ early and 5000′ in the afternoon with high temps right around 60. Wind: light in the western Gorge early with 14-17 east of The Dalles. Afternoon: 14-17 in the western Gorge and 28-32 from The Dalles to Threemile. Saturday: 23-26. Sunday: light easterly.
JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Tuesday: W5/W5/N10-15, W swell 4′ at 8 seconds. Wednesday: W10/W10/N15-20, W 6′ @ 8. Thursday: WNW15-20/WNW15-20/N25-30, W 6′ @ 8. The weekend looks much windier for the whole coast. Jones Wednesday: 5-8. Thursday: 10-13. Friday: gusty 11-14. Sauvie’s: nope, zero, and not at all for the next three days.
Mt. Hood Snow Forecast: on vacation unless needed!

Road and Mountain Biking
If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
