Today looks rather windy, as you may have noticed by the things blowing around in your open-window house this morning. The 7am gradients were already strong, with .14 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc), and that’s indicative of a very windy day on the water. Contributing factors today include a weather system moving through this morning, but it should clear the area this afternoon for a lovely setup. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Expect the wind to be a bit up-and-down this morning as the weather system moves through. That said, as I was writing this the Doug’s sensor was reading 34 mph. Seems a bit anomalous, and Rowena was only reading 21, but it is what it is. Anyway, for the most part, we’ll see gusty 20-23 through the whole Gorge this morning. Sometime around noon, the wind will pick up to 26-30 from Hood River all the way to Threemile, with 30-35 from Maryhill to Arlington for sure, with the possibility of the Rowena stretch maxing out in the 30’s also. Stevenson will likely see 23-26 today. River temp is 63 degrees, flow at The Dalles is 231, and 2605 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

See below for details.
Tomorrow sees an upper level low over the region in the morning, but that low’s negative influence will go away in the afternoon as it moves east of the Cascades. Expect westerlies at 7-11 pretty much everywhere to start the day. In the afternoon, we should see 26-30 east of Mosier with gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River.
Friday starts off with low pressure along the coast. In the evening, that low pressure will move inland. This results in 7-11 in the morning. In the afternoon, we’ll have 20-23 from Avery to Rufus with 13-16 everywhere else. The weekend currently looks windy in the afternoons with 24-28 or so both days. Fingers crossed, because long-term forecasts are notoriously unreliable.
Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Looks like we’ll see the snow level down around 5000′ on Friday and 6000′ on Saturday. We probably won’t see more than an inch of new snow on Friday, but we may see 2-3” on Saturday night.
Random Morning Thoughts
Today is the first day of my spring-summer break. That means I get to step back from my studies for a few day. I get to drive east to find wind instead of west to attend school. I get to make plans to hang with friends, rather than carve out hours to read textbooks.
Life’s so dang busy for all of us. We could fill every hour with work and play and whatever we do to fill our time. It’s important to make sure that we make time to do nothing too. Although we stop “doing” when we sleep, I suspect our bodies have a need for us to stop “doing” while we’re awake as well. That’s based on nothing at all but my own intuition.
I’m on break, and I’m gonna do some nothing while I’m on break. I encourage you to join me. Make a little bit of time each day to stop and do nothing at all. Stop moving. Stop planning. Stop everything for a few minutes. Don’t stop breathing, tho, ‘cuz we don’t want any deaths here. Doing nothing is just as awesome as all that other awesome stuff you do. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
Clouds cover the sky this morning, and will likely dissipate some this afternoon. Expect temps in the mid 60’s this morning and mid 70’s this afternoon (open windows all day long). Strong wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow sees a mostly cloudy day with a chance of light sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early (not sure I buy that, but open your windows anyway) and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Friday looks partly to mostly cloudy early and partly cloudy in the afternoon. Temps will be down near 50 in the morning (open windows? Brr!) and the upper 60’s in the afternoon (open windows). Moderate wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Although it’s quite windy out there this morning, it’s still a lovely day for a road ride or a mountain bike ride. The cool weather and clouds will keep you from overheating. Expect more wind and sunshine this afternoon. All road rides are now open, and the only mountain biking trails still closed at this time are Ape Canyon, Gunsight, 450, 15 Mile and Boulder Lakes. Whoopdee is also closed at this time. No dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill at this time due to delicious grazing cows. Oh, and the Twin Tunnels Trail is closed.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include the Pistol River Wave Bash in Gold Beach, happening a long way from here but leaving the river with a lot less windsurfers. There’s community yoga at 8:30 at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove this morning, ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5 tonight, and the women’s only post-n’ pinot bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 6.
Looking at tomorrow, there’s pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, the Post n’ Pint race-pace bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, Community yoga at Samadhi at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.
Looking at the weekend, there’s that kid’s fishing clinic at Spearfish Lake Saturday morning and Gorge Net’s 20th anniversary party at Hood River’s Waterfront Park starting at 11 on Saturday.
Have an awesome day today!
