Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Clear sky and cold temps stick around on Wednesday. Temps slowly moderate this week. Come Sunday, we’re looking at a round of snowfall. Models are far from agreeing next week, but the general trend is some sort of SW-sourced, relatively warm, atmospheric river event.

It’s so cold this morning that at the time of this forecast, the Meadows website temps had disappeared. Digging a little deeper into the secret back door access, it appears the temp is 0, and perhaps the website is just confused. The weather stays clear and cold today with temps rising into the teens. High clouds move in this evening. Wind: NE 15-20 in the morning, N 10 in the afternoon, and NNW 20-25 overnight.

Flurries are possible all day Thursday. The snow level will be 0′ all day, and temps will be in the upper teens. Up to 1” of snow is possible, but a trace to 1/2” is more likely. Wind: NNW 20-25 in the morning, NW 10-20 in the afternoon, and ENE 5-10 after midnight.

Clear sky returns on Friday. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and down to 0′ overnight. Temps on the slopes start in the upper teens and rise to the low 30’s. No precip. Wind: ENE 5-10 in the morning, S 15-15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Saturday looks clear in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon with snow developing after midnight. Moderate snowfall continues all day on Sunday. We then have all sorts of spread in the forecast models for next week. The ECMWF is trending wetter than the GFS, but both bring additional moisture to the Cascades. It appears it may be too warm for snow at 5000′, but we’re also too far out to be sure. We’ll keep watching this. In the meantime… the packed powder on the slopes is perfect. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s much too cold to be playing on the water today, but here’s the wind forecast in case you need it for other reasons. Rooster and Stevenson start at 20-25 and fade to 10-15. Viento starts at 15-20 and fades to 10-15. The rest of the Gorge starts at 0-10 and fades to calm. River flow is 148kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 32F. Thursday starts light and variable and ends with E 10mph all through the Gorge. High temp: 39F. Friday wind will be 25-30 all day at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. East of Hood River, the wind starts light easterly and picks up to E 10-15.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning turns high overcast later. Temps will be in the teens early and low 30’s this afternoon. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday will be cloudy with flurries during the day and a shot at light snowfall in the evening. Up to 3/4” snow is possible. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and mid 30’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Friday will be partly cloudy early and then sunny. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
