Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Strong wind hammered the snowpack last night, but at least the precipitation stayed snow and not freezing rain (as this forecaster and NWS were both worried about). We now have several days of sunshine on tap before the next weather system swings through late Saturday into Sunday. Models are all over the place on snowfall amounts from this one. Looking even deeper into the future, we have a cold and dry period next week. Models hint at the Pacific high pressure breaking down a couple of weeks from now. Maybe. In the meantime…
Clear sky is the plan for today on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ all day and all night. Wind: NNW 25+ this morning becoming northerly this afternoon. It’s extremely hard to predict how north wind will behave on the slopes; it tends to be stronger mid-mountain thanks to downsloping. We’ll call it 10-30mph this afternoon becoming WNW 15-25 overnight.
Thursday will be clear all day. The FAF will be 4000′ in the morning and 6500′ from midday on through the night. No precip. Wind: WNW 15-25 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and NW 10-20 after midnight. Friday also looks sunny: FAF 6500′ rising to 9000′ overnight wind NW wind at 10-20mph. Saturday: clear in the morning with clouds in the afternoon and snow overnight. Snow continues on Sunday through Monday or early Tuesday. Total water equivalent predictions range from 0.5” to 1.5”. As always, we vote for the higher end of that! Much colder, very dry weather is forecast for the middle of next week.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Looks like westerlies will stick around all the way through the weekend. Wednesday starts with solid gradients (.12/.08) and 1037mb offshore high pressure. Early wind will be in the teens most places with 20-30 at Viento and 10-15 at Stevenson. As low clouds burn off late morning, the wind builds to 22-27 from Viento to Rufus with 14-17 east of there. River flow is 175kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 50F.
Thursday starts with clouds in the western Gorge, sun out east, and westerlies at 14-17 from Stevenson to Arlington. The wind maxes out at 20-23 at Stevenson. Everywhere else: windier! You’ll find 25-29 from Viento to Threemile. High temp: 48F. Friday starts with 11-14 from Viento to Hood River with light westerlies elsewhere. Afternoon: 17-21 from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 54F.
BONUS COAST FORECAST: (north/central/south, waves). Wednesday: NW5-10/N10-15/25-30, NW 9′ @ 10. Thursday: LTNW/N15-20/30-35, NW 5′ @ 8 and W 7′ @ 16. Friday: 5-10/20-25/30-35, NW 2′ @ 6 and W 6′ @ 14.
Coast, Jones, Coast

Hood River Weather Forecast
Mostly clear sky this morning stays that way. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and near 50 later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 0.05% chance of rainbows. Thursday starts cloudy, turns mostly cloudy, and then picks up a few more clouds. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Friday will be sunny all day. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling
Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. The Cold Lap mixed surface ride is at Dirty Fingers at 2pm on Sundays. The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass.
