Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Wild weather continues for Mt. Hood for the next couple of days. Moderate to heavy snow on Thursday night gives way to warming temps and a downpour on Friday night. Models disagree on the timing and intensity of the next system which is forecast for Saturday night or Sunday morning.
For Thursday, expect a foggy morning with snow flurries followed by a stormy night. Snow level 5000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. Daytime precip will be up to 1” of new snow. Overnight precip predictions are all over the place: 0.5” water value (ECMWF) to 1.2” WV (wrf-gfs). Let’s call it 0.7” WV, for 6-8” of new snow. Wind will be SW 25 all day and WSW 30-35 after midnight.
Friday starts with partly cloudy sky and flurries. Heavy snow moves in mid-afternoon and turns to very heavy rain late afternoon. Snow level: 2500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, 9000′ in the evening, and 7500′ after midnight. Precip: 0.1” WV during the day, for up to 1” of new snow. When the front hits, there will be a period of heavy snow from 1pm and 4pm or so: 0.5” WV for 2-4” of dense snow. Between 4pm Friday and 4am Saturday, approximately 3.0” of rain will fall on Mt. Hood. Wind will be WSW 30 early, SW 10-15 during the day, WSW 40 in the evening, W 45 overnight, and SW 40+ on Saturday morning.
Light rain continues early Saturday morning before a switch to clear sky and dropping temps mid-morning. The Euro brings in snow on Saturday afternoon, but the GFS holds off until Sunday morning. So… not really able to give an accurate forecast for Saturday, other than the fact that temps will be dropping and the wind will be relatively strong. Additional snow falls on Sunday (quantity TBD) with the snow level at 1000′-1500′.

Road and Mountain Biking
It’s Thursday morning, and it’s quite wet out there. Many locations have snow on the trails. Under that snow is freeze-thaw in some locations and frozen ground in others. If you ride trails that aren’t frozen solid, you’re going to damage them. Please don’t do it, even on your fat bike.
