Gorge Wind Forecast
Good morning, everyone! Hopefully you were out on the river yesterday, and hopefully you caught the ridiculously big, no-current afternoon swells. According to our ensembles, we’re unlikely to see much more than teens or low twenties for the extended future. It’s fall. You should ask Ma Nature to send some big low pressures systems zipping across the Cascades, and you should ask her to reestablish offshore high pressure in their wake. Until she fulfills our wishes…
Wednesday starts with pressures of 30.03/29.93/29.89 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.04. While that sounds quite good, we also have a frontal system moving through. That tends to impact wind quality and predictability. Dawn wind was in the 15-18 range all through the Gorge with the exception of Swell to Doug’s (11-14). Know what’s annoying about fall? Models don’t handle these weather systems well. Anyway, let’s go with dropping wind east of The Dalles. West of The Dalles, Viento to Mosier should rise to 17-20 this morning. Stevenson: drizzly with 13-16ish. Afternoon westerlies, with aid of offshore high pressure, just might fill in at 17-20 from Viento to Doug’s. Models are a little less optimistic, but I threw in some guesswork. River flow yesterday was 53-84kcfs (enough for big swell at the Hatch), river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is 65F.
Thursday starts out with enough gradient for 13-16 from Stevenson to Arlington in a post-frontal environment. It also starts with temps in the mid 40’s. Brrr. If you want wind, move quickly. By early afternoon, the wind turns light and variable. High temp:P 71F.
Friday will be totally calm. High temp: 75F. Saturday: light westerlies in the morning ahead of an approaching front. Afternoon wind may rise to gusty 21-24, but it may also be a giant gusty mess thanks to the strength of the approaching front. We’ll reevaluate as we get closer. Sunday: rainy and light/variable, probably. I’m on call tonight, so this forecast may or may not cover tomorrow as well. Have a great day today!

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.
Cycling
As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. No official word yet on Whoopdee and Underwood. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
