Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Geez… if I had only waited one more day to take a day off, I wouldn’t have missed forecasting for yesterday’s light westerlies. Apologies for that. I needed a break something bad! We’ll have mostly calm wind for Hood River for Wednesday and Thursday with short period of light to moderate easterlies both days. Friday sees the westerlies return (most likely). Strong wind is forecast both days this weekend, and Monday will likely be windy too.

A ridge of high pressure settles in on Wednesday and sends high temps soaring on both sides of the Cascades. Pressures started at 29.96/29.98/30.02 – higher in the desert that in the metro area. And so it shall remain. Easterlies rise to 15, maybe 15-20, near Stevenson, Iwash (Rooster) Rock, and Viento for a few hours late morning. In the afternoon, the wind goes dead calm all through the Gorge. Waterskiers and wakeboarders and e-foilers and pump foilers, this is your day! River flow over the last 24 hours was 144-206kcfs, river temp is 61.70F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Thursday kicks off perfect for sculling and road biking and whatever else happens in zero wind. Mid-morning east wind rises to 15mph near Stevenson with 10mph at Iwash and Viento. Calm conditions return in the afternoon. High temp: 89F. Friday starts calm and slowly builds. By early afternoon, we’ll have 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. Westerlies build to gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier and 15-18 from Lyle to Doug’s as a weak system approaches offshore. High temp: 90F.

Extended: there’s quite a bit of uncertainty in Saturday’s forecast, but it does look windy. Ensembles are all-in on a strong eastern Gorge day on Sunday. Monday: kinda in the same boat as Saturday – not quite clear yet, but almost certainly windy enough to get on the river. Have a great time out there. Stay cool the next few days!
