Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The snow just keeps on coming… a few inches fell in the last 24 hours, which means your snow surface is likely to have returned to packed powder. That’s a good start to hump day! We’re looking at a bit more snow Thursday and then a warmer, wetter system on Friday into Saturday. This one’s looking right on the edge; I think we’re looking at snain at 5000′ at best. The next system, a colder one, is slated for Monday with strong wind and heavy snowfall. Winter keeps coming…

Wednesday starts cloudy with flurries and 3” new on the ground. Clouds decrease this afternoon but hold at “partly cloudy” and transition to fully cloudy after midnight. Expect packed powder and shallow powder on the ground with temps near 20F to start the day. Just a trace of snow is forecast this morning before the clouds break up. Wind: W 10-15 all day becoming SW 5-10 overnight.

Thursday brings light snowfall. The snow level will be 3500′ all day and 2500′ after midnight. Just a trace is forecast during the day. 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for a couple inches of powder-quality snow. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, W 20 from midday on through the night.

Friday sees warming temps under clouds sky. A trace of snow may fall during the day. By the afternoon, temps at 5000′ will be +2C to +4C; lots of model spread there. That said, this incoming system has a sub-tropical tap (not strong enough to be called an atmospheric river) and is likely to fall as rain below 5500′ or 6000′. About 0.7” WE is forecast overnight (lots of model spread there too) for 4-6” above 6500′, sloppy 1-3” above 5500′, and snain or rain below that. Wind: W 20 in the morning, S 10-15 in the afternoon building to SW 15-30 overnight.

The current forecast has the snow level around 5500′ Saturday morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. A few inches of snow are forecast along with moderate wind. Sunday looks partly cloudy or even sunny. The next system is forecast for Monday with the snow level around 2000′, strong west wind, and up to 1.0” WE. I’ll be gone Friday through Monday on retreat. You got this!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Weather systems continue to spin through the Northwest. Gusty westerlies result. Best chance for a strong day is in the extended forecast; keep an eye on Monday. Starting with today… low pressure over the area keeps us cloudy and gusty. The day starts with westerlies below 10mph in the western Gorge and 10-13 east of The Dalles. Midday wind builds to 14-17 from Mosier to Rufus with 10-13 to the east and 7-10 to the west. Evening: 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus with 10-13 at Arlington and 7-10 west of Lyle. River flow is 159kcfs, river temp is 49F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Thursday starts with light westerlies. A system pushes in midday and gives the wind a nudge upward. Look between Stevenson and The Dalles for gusty 21-24. Swell is likely to have a short period of 21-24 before dropping to gusty 16-19. But wait, there’s more: late afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus with 11-14 west of Lyle and and 14-17 at Arlington. High temp: 57F. Friday looks light and variable all day. The current forecast has westerlies in the 20’s east of The Dalles on Saturday and light/variable wind Sunday. A strong front moves in Monday followed by building high pressure offshore for a good shot at a big day out east. I’ll be gone Friday through Monday on retreat, so you are left to your own devices this weekend!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy sky this morning turns partly cloudy this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 23% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be cloudy all day. Rain might make it intermittently to Hood River during the day, but is most likely early evening. Temp will be near 40 early and in the upper 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 57% chance of rainbows. Friday looks cloudy but mostly dry during the day. Heavy rain arrives overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Light and variable wind. 19% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Whoopdee has muddy areas that are too wet to ride. Syncline doubletrack is a stream, and it’s best if you don’t ride on it. Go up Maui instead. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Post: snow on the upper part of Eldorado. Much of Post is still too wet/snowy to ride. Do not ride in muddy areas or you will do major and sometimes permanent trail damage. If you do, you’ll force people to repair your mess rather than building new trails. Not cool! Ride gravel roads instead. Columbia Hills is rideable with lots of wildflowers.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Big Winds and Oregon E-Bikes are having their 35th/5th anniversary sales Friday through Sunday. This is in-person purchases only, and there will be music, food, and other fun stuff happening in the parking lot. This weekend is the Cherry Festival in The Dalles (Friday-Saturday), and there’s a gravity-sport downhill race all three days at the Maryhill Loops Road.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
