Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Yesterday was a weird one – gradients materialized, but the wind wasn’t as strong as the models forecast. These things happen. I wouldn’t be surprise if we see today over-perform given the solid marine clouds in the metro area. After today, we enter a heat wave. Models are stubbornly holding on to the idea of moderate west wind Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, despite 100+ degree heat. We’ll talk more about that in a bit.

Wednesday starts out windy. Pressures were 30.28/30.15/30.11 with very strong offshore high pressure and full-coverage clouds in the metro area to start the day. This is a Corridor day, for sure. We start with 21-24 from Viento to Hood River. This holds through late morning. Models clear the clouds from the metro area this afternoon, which might result in a midday drop to 16-19, at which point we’ll have that wind all the way from Stevenson to Mosier. Desert heating takes charge in the afternoon. Westerlies return at 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 16-19 from Lyle to Doug’s. To the east: less than 10mph all day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 137-180kcfs, river temp is 65.48F, and high temp forecast is 82F.

Ridging builds on Thursday and sends high temps up 10 degrees over Wednesday. This knocks down the wind thanks to hot weather on the west side. The day starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell and goes calm, or nearly so midday. Afternoon wind, thanks to hot weather in the desert, should return at 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. To the east: calm. High temps max out in the mid 90s.

Friday looks like a day to do something other than wind sports. Easterlies max out at 10mph near Stevenson. The rest of the Gorge will be calm. All day. Temps max out around 100 degrees.

Extended: in an interesting twist, models are insisting we’ll have moderate westerlies Saturday through Monday despite 100+ degree weather. I’m a little skeptical, but hopeful, as the hottest temps will be on the east side of the Cascades at that point. By “hottest”, I mean 105-110. Eeek. By Tuesday or Wednesday, the west side drops into the 90s and the east side holds at 105-110. It’s not quite what we’d call a cooldown, but it’s probably the cooldown you were looking for if you want a big day on the river. Stay cool out there, and have a great day on the river today!
