Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The last 48 hours were pretty wild on Mt. Hood – fluctuating snow levels, heavy rain, heavy snow, strong wind. We’ll see continued snow level fluctuations for the next 48 hours before we head into what appears to be a cooler period.

For Wednesday, the day starts out foggy with flurries. It’s possible the sky will clear for a period in the morning, but clouds return in the afternoon along with light precipitation. Snow level Wednesday will be 2000′ early, 6500′ in the evening, and 6000′ after midnight. A trace of snow will fall during the day. Ab out 0.1” water value (WV) falls overnight, most likely as light rain. Wind will be W 35 in the morning, SW 20 in the afternoon, and building to SW 35+ overnight.

Thursday starts out clear and quickly turns cloudy with precipitation. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 8000′ mid-morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 500′ (near Mt. Hood) after midnight. Precip: 0.4” WV between 10am and 4pm, probably falling as 1/4” rain and 1-2” snow. An additional 0.4” WV falls overnight, for 4-5” of relatively dry snow. Wind will be SW 35 early, SW 40+ mid-morning, W 50 in the afternoon, and NW 30 overnight. That period of W 50mph could shut down many lifts. It could also increase the snowfall by 50%, so keep an eye out for a powder surprise!

Friday starts off clear and stays that way for much of the day. High clouds move in during the afternoon. Free air freezing level near Mt. Hood will be 500′ early, 1000′ midday, and 0′ after midnight. Wind: NW 30 early, light and variable in the afternoon, W 20 overnight.

Light snowfall during the day Saturday (just 0.1” WV) leads into a stronger system Sunday night. This one may start with a period of mixed precip, but will end up with all snow, up to 8-10” of it. Models hit at the entire region heading into a colder period by the middle of next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies on Wednesday morning turn calm midday and easterly at 10-15 after 1pm. River flow is 71,300cfs and temp is 45 degrees. Thursday starts with easterlies at 30-35 near Rooster and 20-25 near Stevenson. The wind turns calm by 10am. As a strong front swings through and high pressure builds offshore, the wind will pick up to gusty W 30-35 from 1pm on, strongest from Viento westward and east of The Dalles. The central Gorge will likely see very gusty 20-30. Remember that heavy rainfall on Monday means there will be lots of debris in the river. Friday’s wind starts with 10-13 out of the west everywhere. By afternoon, the wind will have turned around to E 20-25.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay out of Post, off Whoopdee, and off Hospital Hill – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Try the face of Syncline for best results. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
