Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Late start for me this morning as my body apparently needed lots of sleep. Good thing. It’s going to be a windy one, and rest is helpful in being prepared to slash about the river. Thursday also looks windy. We’ll have a much calmer day on Friday – heck, it’ll probably be calm midday. Westerlies return for the weekend with some model disagreement about which day will be windier. Before I forget – I received a request from a Mosier official to gently encourage wind sports people to stay away. Remember that Mosier is currently under various levels of evac orders, and fire crews may be scooping water from the river. Find a different place to play, please!

Wednesday kicks off clear and sunny all the way from the metro to the desert. A weak, dry, nearly-invisible system will swing through today and spread the wind into the desert despite the lack of marine clouds to the west. Direction will likely be not-great at Rufus and The Wall – that’s how it generally is on cold front passage. The day started with gradients of 30.10/30.01/29.97 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.04. Westerlies were running in the 17-20 range Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east of Mosier to Threemile. As this system approaches, the wind rises to gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to Arlington by noon or so. In the afternoon, we should have gusty 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington with a shot at 30-33 from Lyle to Arlington. Threemile climbs to 26-30, and Boardman rises to 23-26. Models hint that the Stevenson-Hood River stretch will drop to gusty 18-23 after noon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 105-203kcfs (111-185 at Rufus), river temp is 70.70F, and high temp forecast is 81F for Hood River and 88F for Arlington.
Thursday starts off with marine clouds on the west side, probably east of Hood River. We can’t rule out a few sneaking past Hood River for a short period in the early morning. The wind starts with 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 east to Arlington. The wind drops off and turns calm east of The Dalles in the afternoon, so don’t go driving out there. Afternoon westerlies will be gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 17-20 at Swell. High temp: 76F.

Friday sees the wind stall for a day. We could see 10-13 Stevenson-Hood River early and late, but most of the day will be nearly calm. Aloft: light east wind, but probably not on the river. High temp: 83F.

Extended: offshore high pressure and desert heat continues for the weekend, and this sets us up for wind. As of this morning, the forecast has both days with at least low to mid 20s. The deterministic GFS says Sunday will be windier, but the Euro ensembles say Saturday will be windier. Whatevs. It’ll be windy. Looking at the early part of next week, we have massive tropical moisture, less wind, and a shot at some actual rain! Details off all that are not yet clear. IN the meantime, enjoy the wind!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Kreps land (Hospital Hill) is now closed due to fire danger. Underwood usually follows this quickly. Same with Whoopdee. Given the proximity of Whoopdee to the Microwave Fire, it’s best to avoid the area and give fire crews easy access to the roads. Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
