Wednesday, 7/1, also known as 4/20 in Oregon. More California weather in Oregon.

There’s not much wind on the river this morning – single digits – but there’s enough gradient to support wind on the river. Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

So, let’s roll with 10-13 by late morning from Stevenson to Mosier, holding through the afternoon. Late in the day, we’ll likely see 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier with a late bump to 12-15 at the Rowena stretch. Tomorrow looks like 10-13 all day long, strongest near Hood River and Mosier early and from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon.

An upper level low (ULL) over BC moves SW on Friday, sending marine clouds into Portland and creating stronger gradients across the Cascades. Expect 20-23 for Dawn Patrol (maybe more) and 26-30 by late morning from Stevenson to Mosier with the Rowena, Avery and Maryhill stretches of river joining by early afternoon. Arlington will get in on the action too on Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Happy 4/20, everyone! Oh, wait. It’s 7/1. I’m not sure who decided to make weed legal in Oregon on 7/1 and not on 4/20, but we don’t share a similar sense of humor. To be clear, I am not a regular user of marijuana. I am just astounded that this happened in my lifetime. And pleased, because I happen to think this is the sane approach to dealing with a drug that’s less harmful than alcohol or tobacco.

I’d rather we ticket people or offer treatment than imprison them. And since we can’t control or eliminate the black market, I’d rather we compete with it and earn some revenue from that competition. I understand that not everyone believes this way, and I respect your opinion too. That said, I’d like to offer some education this morning.

Now, I’m not your legal adviser (although I am a mediator and am also certified in Intentional Peer Support). But here’s my understanding of the new law: you can possess eight ounces of “useable” weed (who the heck needs that much weed?!?!?) in your house. You can have one ounce with you outside of your house (like a safety blanket?). You can grow four plants, out of public view (you’ll get a ticket for growing in public). You can bake and give away marijuana cookies, etc.

You can share or give away your weed, but you CANNOT sell it. You cannot purchase weed as a retail customer at a medical dispensary (yet – looks like that’ll happen in October). You cannot consume weed or baked goods in public (even in Hood River, where you CAN drink alcohol in public). You cannot take your weed out of Oregon, even to Washington, where’s it’s also legal.

And don’t drive under the influence. You will get a DUII for that. Plus, driving while intoxicated is stupid and dangerous. If you’d like more information, What’s Legal Oregon is a great resource.

Be smart, be safe, and don’t be greedy. Share your weed with your friends, and don’t give it to people under the age of 21, especially not to kids. Weed has powerful and detrimental effects on still-growing young brains. Happy 4/20, Oregon. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Gosh it’s nice out there this morning! I have all the windows and doors open to cool off the house, and I’m enjoying this fan-driven breeze as I work at my computer. Expect temps to climb to the mid 90’s today with relatively low relatively humidity. Bye-bye muggy. Hello … where the fuck do we live? California? Mid-90’s for day after day after day at the beginning of summer? #climatechange Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks similar but less windy: lows in the mid 60’s. Highs in the mid 90’s. Light wind. No rainbows. Friday looks a few degrees cooler and several notches windier. The weekend looks, you got it, hot and sunny. Until Sunday afternoon, when we may see muggier weather and a chance of thunderstorms. Speaking of thunderstorms, there are now 12 fires from last weekend’s storm on the NWCC map.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s dry as a bone out there, so put on your dust tires and get out for an early morning ride in the woods. If road biking is your thing, tomorrow morning looks great. Light wind, cool temps, and plenty of fruit trucks on the road to add excitement!

Upcoming Events

Tonight’s regularly scheduled event, Families at Family Man, is canceled because it’s “too effing hot”. . Still on at 5:30, there’s ping pong at Hood River’s Armory, a whitewater paddle on the White Salmon out of Husum, and the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride from Dirty Fingers. There’s sailboat racing this evening at the Hood River Marina. If you want to voice your opinion tonight, there’s a meeting on the proposed Lyle trail system at 6pm in Lyle.

Tomorrow’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. There are two community yoga classes tomorrow: one at Flow at 8am and one at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30pm.

Coming up Sunday, there’s a swap meet at Windance, and Anson’s Bike Buddies will be taking bikes on consignment for a bike swap for the day. They’ll also be taking donation bikes and parts for a tax writeoff, so if you have an old bike in the garage, even if it’s not working, bring it to Windance Sunday morning.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
