Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s perfectly glassy this morning in Hood River, and that’s the last of the glassy conditions you’ll see for a while! Westerlies grow from zero this morning to “nuking” this evening and hold through Wednesday morning. Moderate to strong westerlies stick around all the way through the beginning of next week if not longer. Wind events this week include the Gorge Downwind Champs (watch for all the downwind floating objects coming through your favorite spot), the Laser Gorge Blowout (Friday?) and the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and Blowout (Friday through Sunday).

Back to Tuesday. We start off with light easterlies in the westernmost parts of the Gorge. For our purposes, the easterlies will be too light. A trough bearing cooler air drops down from the Gulf of Alaska today. Timing is everything. Vote for the earliest possible solution. As of right now, the forecast is for 16-19 by early afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River with 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles mid-afternoon and 27-31+ from Stevenson to The Dalles in the evening. If the cool air arrives on the west side earlier than expected, the wind will be both earlier and stronger than forecast. A bit of instability early to mid-afternoon could hurt wind quality between Viento and Swell, but models indicate the atmosphere will stabilize in the evening and cause the wind to roar back. River flow readings are 157-263kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 93F. Don’t completely wear yourself out, as you’ll want some energy Wednesday morning.

Nuking westerlies continue overnight between Stevenson and Mosier leading to giant swell on Wednesday morning. Also giant: the wind. 29-33 Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 to the east. This forecast will be very abbreviated tomorrow as I too rush to get some Dawn Patrol. The wind fades during the day, but still stays strong. By late morning, models indicate 26-30 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 east to Arlington. Afternoon: 22-25 most locations between Stevenson and Arlington with 24-28 between Lyle and Rufus. High temp: 84F.

Thursday’s forecast is currently for gusty 18-22 between Stevenson and Mosier in the morning with gusty 22-25 between Hood River and The Dalles in the afternoon. 13-16 eastward to Rufus. Light at Arlington. Gusty due to a weak shortwave in the afternoon.

Current extended forecast: 18-22 Friday, gusty and potentially spotty 24-28 Saturday, 27-31 Sunday. Temps appear to hold in the 80’s, at least from this morning’s vantage point. Enjoy all the wind!

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. The Laser Gorge Blowout is scheduled Friday. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the (all windsport) Blowout is scheduled Friday-Sunday. The Race Across Oregon starts Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
