It’s another east wind morning here in the Gorge, with less gradient than yesterday but the same amount of wind at Rooster Rock. The gradient, in case you were wondering, is E .08 (pdx-dls) as opposed to yesterday’s .14, but it’s still blowing 30 at Rooster. I would like to point out that 30 at Rooster does not equate to 30 at the Hatch. It’s more like a Arlington 30. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Anyway, you can expect 26-30 this morning at Rooster with Stevenson jumping up from its current mid-teens to the 24-28 range midday. Both beaches will fade to light easterlies in the afternoon, switching to west wind overnight.
Tomorrow morning sees a trough of low pressure move over the Pacific Northwest, probably pushing marine clouds into the Portland metro area while leaving HR and the eastern Gorge in the sunshine. That sets us up for 12-15 from Viento to The Dalles in the morning with gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with a touch less wind at Arling-Roosie.
Thursday sees that trough of low pressure linger for a bit before moving east. As it goes on its merry way, high pressure will fill in behind. It’s not strong high pressure, but it’s enough to make for a relatively steady burst of wind. Expect 13-16 in the morning near HR and Mosier with 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles, possibly at Rufus too.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m thinking this morning about an incident that happened a few months ago: a friend’s dog got into his stash of marijuana cookies (hey, it’s Oregon, and pot cookies are legal here). The dog was so high that he was stumbling into things, staggering and swaying, and was unable to do his normal dog-like things. My friend and his friends found this funny.
It’s not funny. Causing suffering in other beings is never funny; there’s already too much suffering in the world. Sometimes we cause suffering in other creatures for the sake of science and research and the betterment of humanity. Whatever your ethical beliefs about that, creating suffering is not something to take lightly. And suffering is not humorous.
The Germans have a word for taking delight in the suffering of others: Schadenfreude. The Buddhists have a word for the opposite, taking delight in the successes and joys of others: Mudita. If you’re up for it, run a little thought experiment right now: Think about a time when someone you know failed. Get excited about that. Be glad something bad happened to them. Got it? Okay. Now, notice how your body feels. Are you tense? How does your heart feel? Do you feel a little off balance?
Now let’s try the opposite: think of a time when someone in your world achieved something. Open up your mind and celebrate for them. How does your body feel now? Your heart? Your soul?
It’s easy to create more joy in your life by taking delight in the joy of others. And as a bonus, people will love you. We want people to celebrate our successes; on the inside, we’re still little kids seeking the approval and love of others. Celebrate the people who are celebrating, have compassion for those who are suffering, and have an awesome day!

It’s another awesome, amazing, beautiful, gorgeous, incredible early fall day. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid to upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. Thursday looks partly cloudy early and sunny in the afternoon with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows for the three-day period. Models are still disagreeing about the weekend weather.

Road and Mountain Biking
It’s still very dusty out there, and the trails are really getting hammered with brake chatter. I had a request from a subscriber this morning to remind everyone that pro-active braking is good for the trails, and that locking up your brakes and skidding, while fun, does massive damage to the trails. Please be gentle with your braking. If you cannot, you will be banished to the pavement, where locking up your brakes will only damage your tires! In serious road biking news, today looks lovely (after it warms up) with light east wind and sunshine. The next two mornings look chilly, and the next two afternoons look windy enough to be irritating to road bikers.
