Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple more days of strong west wind are followed by an solid stretch of more moderate westerlies. As of this morning, it looks like those moderate westerlies will stick around at least through the weekend despite the heat. Thank the extra-hot desert for the thermal assistance! Tuesday will not be hot by any stretch of the imagination. Temps only max out in the low 70’s, which means you’ll be feeling the chill on the beach in your wet wetsuit! Pressures started at 30.03/29.97/29.82 for gradients of 0.16 and 0.05. Looking out the window, I see a few little marine clouds drifting past Hood River. Combine that with the gradients for a good shot at Rufus at some point today.

We’ll start Tuesday with 20-30 between Viento and Mosier with 15-18 near Stevenson, 10-13 near Rowena, and 16-19 out east. Mid-morning wind rises to 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 23-26 at Stevenson, 20-23 from Lyle to Doug’s, and 17-20 out east. Models hold that strong wind all day and add in some eastern Gorge fun in the afternoon: you’ll find 26-30 near Rufus and 22-25 near Arlington. East of Arlington, the wind looks light, or at least lighter. River flow yesterday was 250-287kcfs (Rufus-appropriate flow), river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast, as mentioned before, is merely 72F.

Marine clouds push to Hood River on Wednesday morning for a chilly (45F) and breezy start. Dawn Patrol greets you with 24-27 from Viento to Mosier with 18-23 at Stevenson and 10-13 to the east of Mosier. There could be a surprise upper teens to low 20’s from Amayah’s amazing Indian food cart (the location formerly known as Biggs) to Arlington. We’re probably going to see that midday lull/shift that happens in the Corridor; head to Mosier-to-Doug’s for 24-27 when that happens. Stevenson will likely hold in the mid-20’s, but we’ll probably (not certainly) see a drop between Viento and Swell to 19-22. Afternoon wind picks up to 26-29 from Mosier to Rufus with teens at Arlington. High temp: 68F.

A mix of clouds Thursday morning gives the desert a bit of a jump on heating. Dawn Patrol will be 18-21 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 all the way east to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to 21-24 in the west and holds in the low teens out east. High temp: 72F.

We enter a warming trend starting on Friday, which means you’ll be staying close to Hood River for the best results through this heat wave. In a fun twist, models are holding on to westerlies at least through the weekend. Why? The desert just keeps getting hotter than the metro area. As of right now, and very much subject to change, we have 17-20 on Friday, 11-14 Saturday, and 22-25 on Sunday. Also of note is that the coast will be windy all the way through the weekend. You can escape the heat there too!

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: with cool weather in the forecast for at least a few days, it’s a great time to get more seeds in the ground. It’s also a great time to plant. Plants like cool weather. But maybe wait until after today’s windstorm, because plants don’t like nuking westerlies any more than you do! Those of you planting sweet potatoes (yes, you can grown them in the lowlands here) will want to plant those slips like you plant tomatoes – deep. Bury them up to their last set of leaves. They’ll make lots of roots, and lots of roots make for healthy plants that make lots of sweet potatoes. Happy gardening.
