Gorge Wind Forecast

High temps drop about 10 degrees today and set us up for a return to all-day westerlies. Light wind on Wednesday accompanies hotter weather and a chance of evening thunder. Stronger wind is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Looking in more detail at Tuesday, we start with a ten degree temp difference between the metro area and the Gorge, enough to start the day with westerlies in the 19-23 range from Viento to Hood River. The rest of the Gorge is happily puffing along too; averages at Stevenson and out to Arlington are 10-13 or so. We’ll see the wind build to 24-27 from Viento to The Dalles by late morning with 18-22 at Stevenson. Rufus will probably join in this afternoon. With heat set to equalize between the metro area and the Corridor this afternoon, we could see our standard-issue midday lull take the westerlies to the upper teen or low twenties midday before an evening rebound east of Mosier. River flow is 181kcfs and temp is 68 degrees.

Hotter weather and lighter wind is in the forecast for the first half of Wednesday We’ll see “light” westerlies in the morning, maxing out at 6-9 or so west of Hood River with less everywhere else. The light wind holds through late morning. Overall weather conditions get more interesting in the afternoon. If the forecast holds, a weak disturbance will move from the California coast into the eastern reaches of the Gorge in the evening. This takes the wind to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles mid-afternoon on. Stronger wind is possible. However, this disturbance may set off thunderstorms, or at least building thunderheads. Keep that in mind when you’re assessing for safety. High temp: 96.

Wednesday evening’s disturbance will still be in the desert on Thursday morning. If thunderstorms don’t materialize, we’ll have gusty westerlies at 25-29+ to start the day from Stevenson to Doug’s. As that weather system moves north and east during the day, westerlies fade to 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 94.

We’re currently looking at a forecast of 27-30 on Friday. The weekend looks cooler with gusty westerlies in the mid 20’s.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.
