Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Looks like we’ve got wind at least through Friday or Saturday. We run into model differences for the weekend – there’s just not enough agreement yet to make a call. More than likely, we’ll have west wind of some sort through the weekend, but we’ll have to wait for the details.

Don’t get sucked too far out into the future – never leave wind to find wind! We’ve got wind right here for Tuesday. Westerlies open up Tuesday with 21-24 from Viento to The Hook with 10-15 everywhere east of Hood River and also at Stevenson. The wind nudges up to 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning and spreads east to Doug’s this afternoon. Models suggest we’ll see another round of thunderheads, like yesterday, which could knock the wind down to 13-16 from Viento to Mosier mid to late afternoon. Stevenson ignored those thunderheads yesterday, so let’s keep it at 23-26 this afternoon. East of Doug’s, westerlies hold in the 13-16 range this morning and maybe this afternon, but… Afternoon instability could wreak havoc with the wind in the desert, so don’t make that your primary venue today. River flow yesterday was 110-182kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Tomorrow’s speeds look similar, but the mechanism driving them is a bit different – a trough moves east of the Cascades in the afternoon and nudges the wind upward. Once again, we’ll have thunderheads along the Cascade Crest. Morning wind is likely to be more reliable than afternoon wind. The day starts with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 at Stevenson and east of Mosier to Arlington. When that trough shifts, the wind shifts too. Stevenson holds at 21-24. Viento to Mosier drop to 13-16. Lyle to Avery rise to 23-26. Wait for the Executive Session, and you’ll find 23-26 as far east as Rufus. High temp: 83F.

Offshore high pressure strengthens on Thursday, and a heat low fills the entire Cascadia east side. Dawn Patrol arrives with 17-20 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 east to Arlington and also at Stevenson. Midday wind rises to 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 15-18 at Rufus. Wait a bit longer, and you’ll have 23-26 (thanks, thermals!) from Stevenson to Avery, perhaps all the way to Rufus. High temp: 88F. The GFS holds the mid-20’s westerlies through at least Sunday. The Euro is less enthusiastic about Saturday and Sunday, but still about 70% on board with wind of some sort. Good luck finding a rest day in there. Have fun!

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. When’s it gonna happen? Who the heck knows? Did it rain on the 44 trail system over the last few days? Go check it out and tell me! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill on the trail between the top of Roll Baby Roll and the Bench. This means you cannot make a full circle. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger at this time. Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Lower Cooks, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

You have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
