We’re starting off this lovely morning with a lovely sunrise (first I wrote sunset, signifying that I should still be in bed). Gradients at 5am were around .09 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc), and wind speeds on the river were in the teens at Swell and from Maryhill out to Arlington with nada at Stevenson and single digits near Rowena. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Looks like we’ll see the wind pick up as the day goes on and an upper level low moves into Washington. Expect 17-20 from Viento to Doug’s by noon or so with 24-27 this afternoon from Viento to Rufus. Stevenson, Rufus, and Arlington will likely max out around 20-23 today.
Wednesday starts off with westerlies at 10-13 or so from Viento to Mosier. High pressure building off the coast in the afternoon gives us 13-16 or maybe 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s with light wind further east.

See below for details.
Thursday morning sees an upper level low marching toward Vancouver Island. The increased marine layer from that feature will likely start us off with 12-15 from Viento to Arlington. Thursday afternoon looks like 24-27 from Swell to Arlington. Or… if an incoming cold front proves disruptive, as they often do, we’ll see the wind drop off at Swell, limited the stronger afternoon wind to areas east of Bingen.
An active weather pattern kicks in on Friday, sending showers and rainbows into the western Gorge. As of right now, Friday looks quite light in the wind department, with 10-13 all day long, strongest east of Mosier.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.
Random Morning Thoughts
I jumped on the Vanpool this morning at the Hood River Waterfront, and I walked to school this morning along the Portland Waterfront. Scattered about the Hood River Waterfront were RV’s and cars containing sleepy people. Along the Portland Waterfront, as far as I could see, were piles of discarded trash.
Cups. Pizza boxes. Styrofoam containers. Napkins, fireworks, and plastic silverware.
What does this say about us as humans, that in some situations, we toss our trash on the ground and walk away? We are, unfortunately, pack creatures. We’re wired to conform, because conformity keeps us safe. When we see someone next to use toss trash on the ground, we’re more likely to think it’s okay to do the same.
And sometimes we’re just lazy – we don’t want to haul our garbage all the way home with us. Perhaps we justify this by blaming the people who didn’t put out enough trash cans. Or maybe we just say, “Everyone’s doing it, so I will too.”
Sometimes it feels safer to do what the rest of the pack is doing, but it’s more powerful to make a thoughtful choice. This isn’t just about littering – it’s about every choice we make, from our choice of transportation to our choice of partners (or choice not to partner!). When we think carefully about our future actions, we’re more likely to live without regrets. May your day be regret-free. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
It’s still looking like we’ll get some rain later this week, so please keep your fingers crossed, both for the trails and for the cherry farmers. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could keep the rain on the trails and off the fruit? In road biking news, I went for a ride yesterday afternoon, and even though it was very windy on the river, it was just fine for road biking, especially in upper Odell, where there wasn’t any wind at all. Moral of this story? Shut up and ride!
