Gorge Wind Forecast

I’m really struggling trying to write the Gorge wind forecast this morning because I keep getting distracted by #eaglecreekfire updates. So, I’m just going to jump in and get this done. In a nice twist this morning, there’s calm wind at Rooster Rock, which I’m sure is really helping the firefighters in that area. If the models are correct, the wind will build to 10-15 there midday, before fading, while the Cascade Locks area sees E 25-30 this morning, slowly fading to E 10-15 after 2pm and switching to W 5-10 after 11pm. Areas between Cascade Locks and Rooster will see easterlies that fade the further west you go.

Tomorrow starts with W 5-10 near Cascade Locks and W 12-15 between Viento and Hood River. As the heat low shifts eastward, we’ll see the wind build quickly to 24-27 between Cascade Locks and Rufus with 10-13 west of Cascade Locks. The atmosphere will become increasingly saturated and unstable Wednesday afternoon, giving us a possibility of thunder late in the day. This generally knocks down the wind speed, a good thing with a massive wildfire to the west of Hood River.

Thursday morning sees clouds west of Viento with scattered clouds possible in Hood River. We’ll have west wind at 18-22 between Cascade Locks and Hood River for Dawn Patrol with 25-29 from Mosier to The Dalles. The wind will quickly build to rangy 26-32 between Cascade Locks and Rufus in the afternoon (assuming clouds burn off at Cascade Locks – otherwise expect 18-22 there). Arlington will see 22-25.

Friday’s forecast has switched from relatively light west wind to stronger west wind, and it’s still pretty far out to be forecasting. For now, it looks like clouds and sprinkles in the western Gorge, as far east as Hood River, along with west wind at 15-18 early and 25-29 in the afternoon. Saturday’s currently looking like W 22-25.

Random Morning Thoughts

I finished a book recently that devoted a fair bit of time to a discussion of what motivates people to step up and help others in public situations. Turns out it has very little to do with internal personality features; instead, the greatest predictor of whether one individual helps is whether other individuals help.

We unconsciously look for social clues and do what others are doing. My friend Megan and I experienced this directly yesterday. We were driving up 35 when we saw smoke by the side of the road. We saw a guy with a campfire. Nobody was doing anything… we talked about what to do. We felt really uncomfortable, but we walked over and asked him to put it out. It was awkward.

I think about what would have happened if the 100 people in the vicinity of the child lighting fireworks at Eagle Creek had noticed what was happening and stopped him. Same goes for the friends of those tossing cigarette butts out windows and onto dry ground.

Our internal wiring tells us to keep quiet. It’s powerful. Observe it in a non-emergency situation and you’ll feel it for yourself. But Smokey is right: “Only you can prevent wildfires”, and only you can step in and help others and stop things from happening, even when it goes against your instincts and stretches your comfort zone. I hope all of you are safe, and I hope your homes are safe as well.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a smoky day today, and will remain that way. Expect increasing smoke tonight. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 90’s this afternoon. Strong easterlies early, fading this afternoon, switching to west overnight. Tomorrow looks like mid 60’s early and low 90’s in the afternoon with a chance of thunder overnight. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. We may see a few marine clouds Thursday morning. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows. Looks like we might see a few sprinkles on Friday.

Heads up: Mosier is testing out some new bike-friendly intersections from today on through the 9th. Dethman Ridge Road and Erchk Hill are both closed at their west ends due to bridge rebuilding. The Gorge 400 near Cascade Locks and the Historic Columbia River Highway Trail are closed, as is I-84.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
