Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

For now, we have a stellar Tuesday on tap. Perfect packed powder groom is all yours after about 6” of new fell in the last 24 hours. Partly cloudy sky is the plan this morning. Clouds move in midday, and light snow falls from early afternoon on through the evening. The snow level will be 1000′ this morning, 1500′ this afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for an inch of new powder. Same overnight. Wind: WSW 15-20 this morning, SW 10-20 midday, WSW 20-30 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Wednesday looks snowy all day and all night, and it also looks snowy in the lowlands. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. Those are effective snow levels based on 850mb temps – use them to judge snow quality. The actual snow level will be lower. About 0.6” WE is forecast during the day, for 7-8” powder. Another 0.2-0.3” WE is forecast overnight for 2-3” of slightly heavier, but still excellent snow. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, SE 20 midday, and SW 5-15 from early afternoon on through the night.

Thursday starts with light snowfall and transitions to sun breaks with clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning and will fall to 0′ overnight under clear sky. Just 0.1” WE is forecast for 1” new snow. Wind: SW 5-10 becomes variable to 5 then NW 20-25 in the afternoon and light/variable overnight. Friday looks dry and cold with perfect packed powder under clear sky in the morning and high overcast sky in the afternoon.

Details for Saturday aren’t yet clear. There will be a low-end moderate, quick-moving atmospheric river. There will also be warm air accompanying this feature. It’s unclear how far north and east that warm air will reach. At the very least, Saturday’s snowfall will be dense and heavy. At the worst, we’ll see a transition to rain at some point. With a 5C range for predicted temps at 850mb, it’s just not possible to make a call yet. One thing almost for sure: you won’t want to drive the Gorge Saturday morning on your way to your chosen resort. Have a great week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Thursday starts with 20-25 at Rooster and 10-15 at Stevenson. After 10am, the wind turns calm. Stronger easterlies are forecast for Friday and Saturday.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
