Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Gorge Wind Forecast

Cloudy sky and drizzle this morning in Hood River is a direct message to head eastward to wind. Gradients agree. At 6am, they stood at .06 and .09. Give the day a couple hours to heat up and allow the wind to settle into a groove. Generally speaking, the wind this morning will be in the 15-17 range. Exceptions include Viento, always windy when it’s raining. You’ll find gusty 20-30 there. Arlington starts the day in the low 20’s. If you wait until early afternoon, you’ll find gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Doug’s. From The Dalles to Threemile, you’ll find sunshine and westerlies blowing in the 24-27 range. River flow is 192kcfs. River temp is 55F. High temp forecast for Hood River is 60F.

Wednesday brings us another westerly day. Weather complications include atmospheric instability over the western half of the state. That’s likely to toss some unreliability into the wind. That said, the day starts with light westerlies, 7mph or less, all through the Gorge. By mid-morning, the wind builds to 14-17 from Viento to Doug’s with 10-13 or less at Stevenson and in the eastern Gorge. Convection plays a role in the afternoon and makes this forecast untrustworthy. Best case scenario: gusty 13-16 and sprinkles in the Corridor and western Gorge with gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus. East of there: 12-15 until early evening and then 22-25 until sunset. High temp: 61F.

Moving on to Thursday, we remain under the influence of a Nevada low and instability. Models disagree on weather details, but the wind situation is relatively clear, at least until convection fires off in the afternoon. Offshore high pressure drives strong westerlies. Expect 22-25 from Viento to Rufus to start the day with 12-15 under the clouds in the west and 18-22 east of Rufus to Threemile. Models suggest the mid-morning session will be the strongest of the day: 26-29. Get it before convection monkeys with the afternoon session. It’s hard to predict exactly, but there’s a good chance the wind will become unreliable and drop to the 22-25 range from Stevenson to Rufus. High temp: 62F.

Models aren’t exactly in agreement through the weekend. Some predict increasing rain, and some do not. They do hint at continued moderate to strong westerlies through Sunday. Given all the other moving parts, that’s no sure thing. Either way, rain or wind, we win! Enjoy the river today!
