Gorge Wind Forecast

Stronger westerlies return for Tuesday and Wednesday before a dip on Thursday and Friday. The long range forecast calls for light westerlies, or even easterlies, on Saturday followed by a return to moderate to strong westerlies Sunday. Convection and/or thunderstorms may have an impact on the wind east of Doug’s Tuesday through Thursday. Rain in the western Gorge on Friday shifts the wind focus eastward.

Tuesday morning starts out muggy with westerlies in the teens most places. Early gradients of 0.11 and 0.05 indicate the potential for widespread wind today. However, the potential for thunder from The Dalles eastward today means you’ll want to stay out of the eastern desert lest you risk an encounter with lightning. Morning wind will be 17-21 from Viento to Swell with 12-15 most other places except Stevenson. Single digits start the day there. By late morning, we’ll have 24-28 from Viento to Mosier with 21-24 at Stevenson. Lyle to Rufus join in early afternoon. Again, you’re looking at lighting and thunderstorm potential east of The Dalles from mid-afternoon on, so it’s not a sure thing by any means. Might as well skip the far eastern Gorge – westerlies max out at 13-16 there with a good chance of storms. River flow is 149kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp Hood river: 87. Muggy.

Westerlies continue on Wednesday. A weak system approaching the coast in the afternoon will result in lowered wind quality and strength, especially west of Mosier. Morning wind will be 17-21 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 at Stevenson and 15-18 east of Mosier. Midday: gusty 22-27 from Viento to Doug’s. Models suggest the wind will fill in at 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon and drop to 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. With thunderstorms again in the forecast east of The Dalles, you’ll have better luck staying closer to home. High temp: 86.

Thursday feels the impact of a couple weather systems as well as convection east of The Dalles. General picture: 8-12 early in the day from Viento to Arlington. That holds most of the day before picking up to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Arlington after 5pm. Rain falls in the west on Friday. Westerlies in the teens favor the eastern Gorge.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’st
