Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies continue through Saturday as a series of weather systems moves through the Pacific Northwest. This will result in moderate to strong westerlies that may be intermittent and difficult to predict. That said… it’ll be windy, and you’ll likely have to drive east of Hood River to get the steadiest, strongest wind.
Tuesday starts with moderate westerlies and gradients of .12 and .03. River flow is 321kcfs (experts-only for the Maryhill stretch). The day starts with 18-23 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 east and west of that stretch of the river. An approaching cold front starts to impact the area with high clouds this afternoon – not a great indicator for steady wind. So, you’ll find gusty 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles by late morning to early afternoon. Expect the wind to drop into the 18-21 range from Viento to Mosier mid-afternoon as the front stirs up the upper air. Rufus and Arlington pick up to 21-25 late afternoon.
Cooler air moves into the western half of the region on Wednesday along with deeper marine clouds and lesser morning gradients. Early wind drops to 5-8 through the whole Gorge in response. As that front moves through and the desert heats up, the wind will pick up to 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington int eh afternoon. The western Gorge will likely stay clouds with wind speeds in the gusty 12-16 range.
Thursday looks much cooler – high temps will only reach into the low to mid 60’s. A deep marine layer sits in the western half of the state, likely shifting the wind to the east. The current forecast calls for 10-13 everywhere in the morning. Midday wind hits 21-24 from Mosier to The Dalles and then keeps climbing. Eventually, late in the afternoon, speeds climb to 28-33 from Avery to Threemile. Friday’s forecast is currently 25-29 east of Hood River and Saturday’s forecast is 28-33 east of Hood River. Light westerlies are on the docket for Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking
If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
