Tuesday. Welcome, spring. Nice to see you.

DSC_0211-Edit
I should listen more closely to myself when I say things like I did yesterday. You know, “This isn’t an ideal setup, but…” or, “I’m worried about thunderstorms…” Anyway, the wind did kick in yesterday, but it didn’t last as long and wasn’t as steady as I’d hoped. That said, it was still windy, and there’s still enough current at Arlington for some small, clean swell. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Today’s setup also isn’t ideal: The offshore high is a bit stronger, but the entire PNW is sitting under a trough of inland low pressure. We do still have onshore flow, and the 7am gradients were .06 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc) with .20 (EPH-pdt). We’ll see 10-13 under the low clouds today, probably from Stevenson to Doug’s. There’s a decent chance of 12-15 later, but I wouldn’t put money on it. Further east, past the low clouds, you can expect 13-16 or a touch more this morning and 21-24 or a touch more this afternoon. Sorry for the lack of specificity – you’ll have to look at a satellite image or webcams to determine the location of low clouds. Right now it looks like the extend at least to The Dalles.

Tomorrow looks very similar as far as the big picture – weak offshore high and broad inland low. Expect 5-10 in the western Gorge and 10-13 out east in the morning with 16-19 in the afternoon east of The Dalles. High pressure builds inland on Thursday for 7-11 in the morning and 12-15 late in the afternoon, strongest from Hood River to The Dalles.

Out on the coast, the wind picks up starting Thursday. Expect this (north/central/south) for Thursday through Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30-40, swell W 3′ at 10 seconds and SW 3′ at 17 seconds. That second swell, the SW one, could make things pretty fun out there.

Random Morning Thoughts

I think about neural networks and emotional states a lot, as you might have noticed. I was thinking about them at Arlington yesterday while I was watching the waves and the thunderheads. Thunderheads, btw, unlike our heads, do not contain neural networks – they contain moisture, electrical potential, hail, and updrafts. Sometimes your head may feel like a thunderhead, but I assure you it is not a cloud. It is a head.

We want to be happy/content/at ease, and we get frustrated when we aren’t. We chase the states we want and dwell on those we don’t like. I got news: that ain’t gonna help you. When we’re frustrated or unhappy with where we’re at, and when we chase, we reinforce chasing, discontent and unhappiness, not the calm/happy/equanimous states. Ironic, isn’t it?

If current theory is correct, the most effective thing to do is to notice when we’re in a “good” mental place and sit with it. Pay attention to it. Relax into it. Let it deepen. And let it go when it goes, instead of clinging. Don’t chase. Just notice the next thing. And if you don’t like the next thing, don’t dwell on it. Don’t deepen it. Just let it go. Whatever you choose to stick with will grow stronger and will naturally arise more often.

You may think you don’t have the ability to practice this kind of discernment. I promise that you do. It’s called mindfulness, and it’s the hot new thing, discovered recently by Western medical peeps thousands of years after people in the east caught on. This app is a great introduction. Give it a shot for 10 days – it’ll change your life.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly cloudy out there this morning as we sit under a broad layer of low pressure. It’s like a big momma is sitting on the PNW blocking the sun (this makes me think of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, for some reason). Anyway, we’ll see a mostly cloudy day with a slight chance of showers, especially in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. 3% chance of rainbows. Light to moderate wind.

Tomorrow also looks mostly cloudy as another low pressure system sits above us, squishing the sunlight. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. 3% chance of rainbows.

Thursday starts off partly cloudy and becomes mostly sunny by afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid to upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I still haven’t heard word if Sunday’s t-storms turned the 44 Road dust to tack. I’m hoping you’ll go find out today, because I have toilets to scrub. In road biking news, the wind will back way off starting Thursday and not return until Monday, if the forecast doesn’t change. I’d recommend Thursday for the best combo of moderate temps and light wind.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

Tonight is by far my favorite night of the week. Why? Tonight is meditation night. Mindfulness, if you haven’t heard, is the hot new thing. You can practice it in the company of others at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 every Tuesday night. You’ll be calmer, more balanced, and more in tune with yourself. As a bonus, if you come to Yoga Samadhi tonight, you’ll meet cool people, including wise monks.

Other events tonight include pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30, triathlong practice at Mayer park at 6pm, and community yoga, free or by donation, at the Mosier Senior Center at 7pm.

Tomorrow night is the all-levels women’s Post N’ Pinot bike ride. That ride leaves Dirty Fingers Bike Shop at 5:30pm or the bottom of Post Canyon Road at 6pm. Complete the ride – it’s about two hours – and you’ll get a glass of wine and a raffle ticket for cool prizes. Tomorrow night’s also ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 and sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina from 6 to dusk.

Coming up Saturday, there’s a windsurfing race in Hood River, a standup paddle race in Pine Hollow, and Anson’s Bike Buddies will be accepting used bike donations in The Dalles at The Crates building from 11 to 3.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
