Gorge Wind Forecast

Tuesday’s kicking off with nuking easterlies. Get on it. While the wind will remain strong for most of the day, it’ll be dropping out of “nuking” as the day goes on. Lesser, wetter easterlies continue on Wednesday and Thursday. Those are followed by a calm day on Friday and perhaps a return to (wet) easterlies on Saturday. This may be the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday – I’m on call tonight.

Tuesday’s pressures start with 30.22/30.40/30.40 for east gradients of 0.18 and 0.00. Iwash (Rooster) Rock started the day with a 48mph average. Nuking, for sure. Stevenson: 25-30. Viento: 20-25. The wind holds for a few hours this morning and starts to fade this afternoon. By evening, Iwash and Stevenson fall to 20-25, and Viento will be at 15mph or less. River flow yesterday was 64-106kcfs, river temp is 58F, and high temp forecast is 54F.

Wednesday starts with 20-25 from Iwash to Stevenson with 15ish at Viento. Rain moves in during the afternoon, and the wind backs off a bit. Stevenson falls to 15-20, and Iwash to 15mph. High temp: 52F. Thursday will be rainy with easterlies at 20-25 near Stevenson, and only Stevenson, to start the day. The wind fades during the day and eventually turns light westerly. Peak speed: 10-13mph near Stevenson, and only Stevenson. High temp: 56F. Friday looks light and variable. Forecast uncertainty increases after Friday, so we’ll leave it here. Stay safe in those nuking east winds!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

The abbreviated forecast continues…. After a dry day on Tuesday (free air freezing level above 10,000′), we move into a wet Wednesday and Thursday. Drizzle starts up Wednesday afternoon and turns into nearly-torrential rain Wednesday night thanks to the combo of an atmospheric river and WSW wind at 50mph. Expect a couple inches of rain Wednesday night with the snow level at 10,000′ or higher.

Rain continues on Thursday during the day and tapers off in the afternoon. Snow level: 10,000′ falling to 6500′ after midnight, after the precip has stopped. At least an inch of rain will fall. Wind drops from WSW 50mph in the morning to W 20 in the afternoon. Friday looks sunny with the freezing level around 6500′ with wind variable to 15mph. The next system, another wet one, is forecast for Saturday. The snow level will be around 9000′. Models are still in flux about how much rain will fall on the slopes. It could be half an inch. It could be three inches. We’ll have to wait and see. Looking deep into the future, it’s at least two weeks before 850mb temps have a shot at 0-2C, the temps we need for snow at Timberline and Meadows. We’ll keep on watching… stay dry out there!

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: temps dropped into the upper 20’s or less on Saturday morning. Trails that are exposed to open air (not under a tree canopy) are likely to experience freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride on thawed trails, you will do significant and permanent damage. DON’T. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage.
