Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Not much is happening in the world of wind over the next few days. Hopefully you were out yesterday, and hopefully you’re less sore than I am! We’ll see light and variable wind Tuesday through Thursday. Easterlies are likely starting Friday. That said, these easterlies will be driven by a deep pool of cold air, cold enough that the wind will spill over the Cascade Crest and be less on the river. For now, the Friday forecast is E25. Saturday: E 25. Sunday: E 20. That’s all subject to change some, of course.

Coastal winds will be side-off (south coast) or offshore (north coast) towards the end of the week. If you have your sights set on some surfing, keep an eye on that forecast as well. Humph. I guess that’s all I have to say about wind for today. I’m probably going to skip Wednesday’s forecast because I’m on call tonight. Have a great day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Here comes the first big snowstorm of the season! We’ll have a solid dumping on Tuesday night followed by cool temps through at least Saturday morning. If you’re going to play in the snow, expect winter driving conditions.

Tuesday starts with partly cloudy sky. Snow arrives by late morning or early afternoon and continues all night becoming heavy in the evening. The snow level will be around 3000′ during the day, briefly at 4000′ overnight, and back to 2500-3000′ by Wednesday morning. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast by 5pm. Another 0.7” to 0.9” is forecast tonight for, yup, 7-9” of medium density new snow. Wind: W 15 in the morning, SW 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 15 overnight.

Wednesday brings intermittent light snowfall in the morning followed by clear sky in the afternoon and increasing clouds overnight. The snow level will be 2500-3000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and as low as 500-1000′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast for the morning for 1” of new. A trace is possible after that. Wind: WSW 15 in the morning, 10 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday all look clear, sunny, and cool. The free air freezing level Thursday will be 2000′ or less. ON Friday and Saturday, the freezing level will be no higher than 1000′. In other words, the snow that does fall isn’t going anywhere. Of note: light wind accompanies this storm. Sometimes early storms have enough wind to pile up snow on leeward slopes. Not this time. Be extremely cautious if you’re going out to try for some early turns. And… enjoy the new snow!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky this morning adds rain by early afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 50’s later. Light westerlies. 11% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be showery through early afternoon. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light and variable wind turns easterly. 78% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be partly cloudy with showers in the morning turning mostly clear in the afternoon. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Frost is highly likely Friday.

Cycling

Lots of brown pow out there. Go get some for yourself! Hurry up, because we’re likely to enter a freeze-thaw pattern later this week, and riding could be out for several days due to the potential for damaging trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
