Tuesday-Wednesday forecast. Happy Locals’ Day!

If it’s still morning on Tuesday and you’re looking out your window in the Gorge, you’re seeing something a wee bit different than what you’ve seen for quite a while: solid clouds and steady rain. That’s not exactly an ideal wind setup, and the wind agrees, with just 5-10 at all the beaches. The Tuesday…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

That’s not exactly an ideal wind setup, and the wind agrees, with just 5-10 at all the beaches. The Tuesday morning gradient started at .05 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc), not bad, given the setup. As this weather system moves through early in the afternoon and high pressure builds in behind, we’ll see the wind pick up. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 7-10 until midday on Tuesday. As the clouds start to break up, the wind will pick up to gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier (or under the clouds – clouds trump forecaster beach guesses) with 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington. We should see these stronger speeds kick in by 3pm or so.

Wednesday starts off with a more stable setup, but a weak system approaching in the afternoon or evening will impact the wind quality. Expect 7-10 to start Wednesday with 23-26 in the afternoon. The stronger afternoon wind will be located from Viento to Rufus. Given the setup, it’s quite likely that the Swell area will only see 90 minutes or so of decent wind before dropping back into the gusty teens. Stevenson and Avery are likely to benefit from this setup (assuming Stevenson escapes the clouds), with steadier 23-26.

That system passes on Wednesday night, leaving a stable setup on Thursday. The day will start with 12-15 from Viento to Swell, possibly at Mosier too, and possibly not. On Thursday afternoon, we’ll see 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Friday currently looks like east wind at 7-10 through the entire Gorge – a great day for road biking all those rides you’ve set aside during the windy season.

Random Morning Thoughts

First off this morning, I made an error in my HTML yesterday. For those of you interested in the book I was talking about, it’s called The Mind Illuminated, and it’s fantastic. Life-changing, I’d say.

Why?

Well, we humans spend a lot of time chasing entertainment from outside. We put a lot of time, money and energy into movies, drinks, books, television, gadgets, food, music, and Seahawks tickets. And while it’s fine and good to enjoy all of the wonderful things the world has to offer, it’s also good to remember that there’s endless entertainment and challenge contained within the mind-body.

If you like complex activities that take years to master (windsurfing, kiteboarding, mountain biking and Telemark skiing come to mind), you’ll enjoy meditation. The great piece about tackling the mind sport is that you carry all the required equipment in your head: attention, awareness and mindfulness are with you all the time, waiting to be developed and refined. No extra baggage fees required to take this equipment on a vacation, and there’s no need to ration it like you do with a book, a baggie, or a bottle.

Our complex sports do teach us a lot – determination, diligence and dedication. Meditation does this more directly, giving us skills that radiate outward through our entire lives. With that foundation and endless internal entertainment, all outside forms of amusement become choices rather than compulsions. Just think how much time you could save and how much you could grow by giving me your Seahawks tickets and meditating instead! Kidding, kidding. You get what I mean. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
