Tuesday-Wednesday: codl weather, freeze-thaw trail warning, strong easterlies…

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong east gradients across the Gorge and Cascades will drive strong easterlies for the next couple of days. We may see a switch to light westerlies on Thursday afternoon before a return to strong easterlies on Friday.

The Tuesday early gradient was E 0.20, and river-level wind was 30-35 at Rooster and Stevenson. Wind should hold in that range all day. It’s worth noting that we’d normally have stronger easterlies with such a large gradient. The east-side cold pool is so deep that the wind is actually going above the Cascade Crest (it’s blowing 46-81 at 8300′ as I write this) and pouring down into the foothills. This will cause strong, gusty easterlies in the eastern reaches of Clark and Multnomah Counties today, probably resulting in some power outages.

The wind will be confined to the Gorge on Wednesday as the cool pool shallows. Expect 40-45 at Rooster and 30-35 near Stevenson in the morning with 30-35 near Rooster in the afternoon and 25-30 near Stevenson. 20-25 is probable at Viento. Morning temp: low 20’s.

Thursday morning starts with easterlies at 20-25 near Rooster with 15-20 near Stevenson and 10-15 near Viento. Morning temp: mid-20’s. While the GFS suggests a return to westerlies, briefly, in the afternoon, that switch-over is often overdone. From this far out, I’d say it’s 50-50 we’ll see westerlies on Thursday afternoon. We’ll be back to easterlies on Friday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast was on winter break, but it’s back because of coastal wind… Swell forecast by NWS. Wind: north coast/central coast/south coast. Tuesday: side-off 15-20/side-off 15-20/N30-35, W swell 4′ @ 15 seconds. Wednesday: 15-20/15-20/LTNE, W 3′ @ 12. Thursday: 20-25/20-25/25-30, W 4′ @ 12.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear and cold weather is the call for the next few days. For Tuesday, temps should drop below freezing by sunrise, only warming into the low 40’s this afternoon. The dewpoint will be extremely low – in the single digits or less. Light east wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks quite cold early – in the low 20’s. Temps warm to the mid 40’s. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and upper 40’s later. East wind. One model suggests light westerlies in the afternoon, but that seems unlikely. No rainbows. No rain for at least the next nine days.

Road and Mountain Biking

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: overnight temps well below freezing will cause freezing and thawing of tacky dirt. Trail tread will be both muddy and extremely delicate in areas not under the canopy. Please don’t ride the trails if you see mud. You’ll do significant damage. Trail sensitivity will increase dramatically as overnight temps drop this week – please avoid Syncline, as it’s the most susceptible to daytime warming and resulting bike tire damage. Remember that the southern half of Whoopdee has been logged (is gone). Riding Underwood? No parking at the trailhead – you’ll need to drive ½ mile east of the trailhead and park there.
