Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The season-starting Big Snow Dump that we’re hoping for doesn’t seem to be in the forecast for the next week. So, keep riding Timberline or heading to the Washington ski resorts to get your fix!

For Tuesday, we have an incoming weather system that’ll bring us some additional base-building snow. The snow level will be 5000′ to start the day. It’ll briefly rise to 5500′ mid-morning before dropping to 2000′ in the afternoon. In an unusual twist, the precipitation will continue after the snow level drops. We’ll see about .9” water value (WV) between 7am and 4pm. That should give us 6-8” of snowfall that becomes decreasingly dense as the day goes on. Another .1-.2” WV falls as an inch or two of snow tonight. Wind will be SW 15 early, SW 20 mid-morning, and W 35 in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday looks like a break between weather systems with sunshine for the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight.

Thursday starts off cloudy with an amazing sunrise due to high clouds. Precip, most likely in the form of wet snow, starts up around 4pm, continuing overnight. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 5500′ when the precip hits, 5000′ in the evening, and 2500′ after midnight. The mountain will receive about .3” WV overnight, for 2-3” of snow. Moderate west wind could up the snowfall total by a bit. Wind will be light SW early, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 35 overnight, dropping to W 20 after midnight.

The long range forecast has clear weather Friday, clouds on Saturday, and clouds on Sunday with a chance of light rain in the evening. That, of course, could easily change between now and then.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the actions I love most is generosity. The great thing about generosity is that it’s a win-win situation. By giving to others, we feel good. And those who receive from us benefit. Although we strive (and are culturally conditioned) to give without expecting something in return, it feels better if our generosity is met with appreciation.

Appreciation can look many different ways: a smile, a thank you card, a return gift, a hug, getting to see the impact of our gift. Those are just a few options.

Now I will do a shameless plug for Anson’s Bike Buddies: This local non-profit started by an 8 year-old and his mom collects used bikes, fixes them up, and gives them to locals in need. You can get involved on Wednesday night by showing up behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. Drop of your used bikes and get a tax writeoff. Stick around and help wash bikes, fix flat tires, or if you have the skills, repair bikes. Bring your tools and stand.

You will be rewarded by knowing that someone else in the community will have a bike because of you (and I know you love bikes and want to see everyone have a bike, right?). You’ll also have a fun evening in community with other generous, bike-loving folks. Thanks for considering giving ABB your time and used bikes. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Tuesday, we’ll have east wind at 20-25 near Rooster with 10-15 at Stevenson and Viento. That’s the morning wind. After noon, the wind will turn westerly. We’ll have a short period of 20-23 everywhere. The wind will then drop to 12-15 between Stevenson and Mosier and stay at gusty 20-23 from Lyle eastward. Wednesday starts with light west wind and turns to east 15-20 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with east 20-25, holds through midday, and then switches to light west wind at 4-8 in the afternoon.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It seems to be mostly cloudy this morning. Rain will arrive around 10am and continue through the afternoon, turning sprinkly overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind in the morning goes westerly later. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday starts off partly cloudy and turns sunny. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. 10% chance of rainbows. Thursday brings high clouds early and rain in the afternoon. The sunrise will likely be spectacular. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind in the morning. West wind late in the day. 54% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you want to give back, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party this Wednesday at 5:30 behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. You can help fix bikes (washing them and changing tires is helpful too), and you can drop off your fixable bikes for ABB to give away. You’ll get a tax writeoff for your donations. In other news, the HRATS annual fundraiser is December 14th at Double Mountain.

Your best bet at this point is Syncline – Post, Whoopdee, Nestor, Hospital and Underwood are all probably too muddy to ride. That means you will damage the trails if you ride them, creating more work for hard-working volunteers who’d rather build new trails than fix your carelessness. The Petersburg Loop is good riding in the winter, but Fifteenmile road is pretty bumpy due to chipseal right now. Maybe ride Emerson/Eightmile instead.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Tuesday, there’s pickup touch rugby at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina. There are two by-donation events: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.

Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party on Wednesday evening at 5:30pm behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. You can come help wash and repair bikes. You can also drop off used bikes and get a tax writeoff.

Have an awesome day today!
