Gorge Wind Forecast

Widespread easterlies are in the forecast for this fine, sunny Tuesday. Westerlies return on Wednesday, get stronger on Thursday, and drop back to the light-to-moderate zone for Friday and Saturday. The current forecast for Sunday is warm, sunny weather with east wind.

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.88-29.96-29.99 for E 0.08 pdx-dls and E 0.03 dls-psc. You might look at that and think about widespread easterlies, and you’d be right! We’ll have 20-25 from Rooster to Viento this morning with a chance of a short period of 25-30 near Rooster Rock. The wind holds through early afternoon west of Swell and then fades to 10-15. When that happens, easterlies pick up to 10-15mph east of The Dalles all the way to Boardman. Between Swell and The Dalles, easterlies remain below 10mph today. River flow readings are 72-91kcfs this morning, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast is 79F in Hood River.

Wednesday starts out calm with some high clouds. As a low transits from the offshore waters of California to the inland desert of Oregon, westerlies return. They’ll max out in the 14-17 range from Viento to The Dalles in the afternoon with 10-13 near Stevenson. High temp: 76F.

Thursday brings a low to eastern WA, weak high pressure offshore, and an approaching offshore front. All the moving pieces aren’t ideal, but that won’t stop the westerlies. The day starts with 25-29 from The Dalles to Threemile with 17-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s and 20-25 near Viento. Afternoon wind speeds are a bit up in the air; the deterministic GFS is predicting 28-32 east of The Dalles. The ensembles aren’t quite so robust – they’re calling for mid to upper 20’s. Either way, it looks like a decent day out east.

Max average speeds will be in the upper teens on Friday. Lesser westerlies are forecast for Saturday. Warm weather all across the land drives moderate easterlies on Sunday. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Yes, there was some rain a couple of days ago. No, it did not change the trails – it’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
