Gorge Wind Forecast

The wind is light enough this morning that ODOT is out repainting stripes on I-84 and about 50 fishing boats are scattered downstream of the mouth of the White Salmon River. Westerlies pick up enough this afternoon to send the fisher-folk home. Lighter wind is in the forecast for Wednesday and even lighter wind on Thursday. It appears westerlies will reappear Friday and Saturday before turning to easterlies on Sunday.

More details for Tuesday: offshore high pressure is our friend today as hot weather stretches all the way from the metro area to the desert. Just enough heat builds over the Gorge to keep the onshore flow going. Expect 14-17 from Viento to Swell through early afternoon. Westerlies pick up to 18-22 from Stevenson to Hood River from early afternoon on. Models don’t like the idea of wind any farther east, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Look for 13-16 from Mosier to Rufus with light wind east of there. River flow is 114kcfs, temp is 68 degrees, and 16,571 Chinook got past Bonneville yesterday. High temp: 89.

Wednesday starts out with light westerlies or light and variable wind. Not much happens in the morning – expect light enough conditions for the fishing boats to stick around through noon. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp: 88. nearly-calm conditions stick around on Thursday. High temp: 93.

As of today’s model run, Friday looks like 21-24. Saturday starts with 20-23 and fades, maybe. East wind arrives (maybe) for Sunday and Monday, although models are far from consistent with the forecast for early next week.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
