Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

This endless train of weather systems continues to rumble through the Northwest for much of the next week. This will, of course, impact wind strength and quality. There’s a bit of hope for stronger wind on Sunday and Monday, but models are far from certain. Looking at Tuesday, we have a light/variable start with weak easterly gradients. Models suggest the easterlies will climb to 15-20 for a few hours mid-morning between Rooster and Viento. Afternoon wind dips to 15ish in that stretch and rises to 5ish from Swell eastward to Arlington. River flow is 295-326kcfs (and likely to rise during the day), river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 78F. That flow is quite high. Be prepared for strong current.

Wednesday sees a weak system swing through. Westerlies return. Morning wind will be 5-8 from Mosier westward with 13-16 from Lyle to Arlington. High pressure knocks the wind down in the far eastern Gorge, so don’t be doing a dawn drive out there; by midday, you’ll find 10-13 near Stevenson, 13-16 from Viento to Rufus, and 7-10 east of Rufus. Late in the afternoon, the wind benefits from an offshore weather system. You’ll find gusty 18-23 from Viento to Rufus with 11-14 near Stevenson and also east of Rufus to Arlington. High temp: 74F.

Thursday starts with very light westerlies around dawn, goes calm midday, and then rises to gusty 11-14 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. High temp: 79F and really, really muggy. Moderate westerlies are forecast in the desert on Friday as transient high pressure lends a hand. Offshore low pressure Saturday does not bode well for wind. Models hint at stronger westerlies Sunday and Monday. Enjoy your time on the river!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

If you head out to the trails, you are likely to find Brown Pow. Enjoy! There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. Eldorado has reopened. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
