Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s Tuesday morning and Mt. Hood has received almost 2” of rain in the last 24 hours. That’s double what I predicted. If only I could be so far off every time it snows! Speaking of snow, we’re about to get some! Expect rain showers this morning, switching to flurries midday and steadier snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon and 2000′ in the evening. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) of mixed precip during the day, for 1-2” of new snow. Then we’ll see .3-.4” WV between 4pm today and 4am Wednesday. With nice cold temps, that’ll give us 4-5” of new snow. Wind today will be WSW 30-35 early, fading to SW 15 this afternoon and turning to WNW 25-30 after sunset. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Wednesday sees an unstable air mass over the region, leading to a day filled with snow flurries. Depending on the instability and actual location the heaviest snow showers, the snow may be heavy at times. The snow level will be 2500′ all day, falling to 1500′ after midnight. It’s hard to say exactly how much snow we’ll receive, so let’s call it .1-.3” WV for 2-4” of new snow, most likely the low end of that range. Wind on Wednesday will be W 25 in the morning and W 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Thursday sees another round of unstable air and snow flurries. The flurries will be lighter than on Wednesday, and they should end in the afternoon. That leaves us with clear sky or partly cloudy sky overnight. The snow level on Thursday will be 1500-2000′. We’ll see .1-.2” WV, for 1-2” of new snow. Wind on Thursday will be SW 10 early and light and variable in the afternoon and evening, turning east overnight.
Friday may start off partly cloudy, but cold, dry air from the east will quickly turn the sky clear during the day. High clouds return in the afternoon as the next system approaches from the west. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ in the morning and 5500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be E 20-23 early and SE 25-30 in the afternoon. The next system is now forecast for Saturday morning. It’s most likely this system will bring rain, or possibly freezing rain if the cold air is still around. Fortunately, models are now predicting far less moisture than they were yesterday. For what it’s worth, Meadows has a preview “pray for snow” day at the mountain on Saturday.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Although this morning started off dead calm near Hood River, the river won’t stay glassy all day. As a matter of fact, the gradient jumped from .00 to .05 between 6am and 7am, and the clouds went from not moving to whipping across the sky. You can expect westerlies at 16-19+ from Steven’s Locks to Mosier from 9am or so on through the afternoon. Rowena and Doug’s are a maybe today. The eastern Gorge, Avery to Arlington, should see gusty 25-29 today between 10am and 2pm or so. Wednesday looks like W 10-13 all day. Thursday starts off light and variable and picks up to E 15-20 in the evening. Friday looks quite cold, but the east wind will be blowing at 45-55 if you can handle the chill.

Random Morning Thoughts
Because we are social creatures, we tend to rely on people and things in our lives for a sense of stability and solidity. Unfortunately, people and things are impermanent. As much as we rely on our family, friends, therapists, social support systems, and even on our State and Country, these things can disappear as fast as a June snowfall.
When the pieces of our constructed reality suddenly disappear, our life can feel like a two-day old spiderweb – full of holes, fragile, unable to catch and hold incoming disturbances.
This raises the question of where we turn for a sense of solidity. The obvious answer is inside, because a sense of solidity and support is merely a mental construction. If we were all advanced meditation practitioners, that might be a resource we could reasonably expect to rely on. For mere humans, it’s important, I think, to build a support network that includes things unlikely to disappear quickly.
A friend of mind uses a certain place in a protected wilderness area. She holds each tree, each peak, each stream as sacred. Others rely on a church group. Some may rely on constant change: the seasons, the water in a favorite waterfall.
I don’t have a solid answer for you. After all, everything we can rely on, in the grand scheme of time, is likely to disappear, just as we too shall live and die. The best we can do is cultivate our inner wisdom, love, and sense of solidity, because those are what will make us a beloved part of the greater world. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s Tuesday morning, and it’s starting off mostly cloudy with sprinkles and patches of blue overhead. You know what that means: RAINBOWS! Expect a sprinkly, mostly cloudy day with more clouds and rain after 4pm or so. Temps will be in the low 50’s all day long. Moderate west wind. 99.94832% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with showers. Showers will multiply in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 98% chance of rainbows. Thursday will probably start off with Nothing interspersed with sprinkles. If we’re lucky, the day will end up partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 30’s (brrr) early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday will likely start off right around freezing, and that’s all I have to say about that.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Well that pretty much did it. No mountain biking for you today. It’s too muddy to ride. There was a brief road biking window yesterday. Your chance today will be mid-afternoon, but it will be windy at that time. It looks dry enough to ride on both Wednesday and Thursday if you can stand the cold. If, instead of riding, you’d like to give back to the trail system, there’s a work party on the Whoopdee trail this Saturday at 9am.
Upcoming Events
It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi with Ajahn Sudanto of Pacific Hermitage and 20-30 of your best meditation friends. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week. This is also the Ajahn’s last week until mid-January. He’s going away on his winter retreat, which must mean that it’s winter now.
Coming up this weekend: a work party at the Whoopdee Trail on Saturday and the HRVHS Gorge Gear Swap. Meadows has a “preview” event next Saturday.
Have an awesome day today!
