We have another round of easterlies in the Gorge this morning, and those easterlies are in the sun, unlike Hood River, which is under the Nothing. Expect easterlies at 30-35 at Rooster this morning with gusty 26-30 in the afternoon. Knock off 5mph or so for Steven’s Locks, and expect it to join in the fun mid-morning. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow starts off with rain and easterlies at 24-28 at Rooster. The easterlies will switch to westerlies at 10-13 from Steven’s Locks to Arlington in the afternoon. As of right now, Thursday looks to start with west wind at 13-16 east of Hood River with gusty 22-25 from Swell to Arlington in the afternoon.

See below for details.
As of right now, the weekend is looking really wet and stormy, which makes for hard-to-predict wind. The most likely scenario is that we’ll see some worthwhile westerlies in the eastern Gorge. However, those may be mixed in with periods of rain, and the periods of wind will likely be short-lived.
The coast forecast is taking a break this week. We’re going to see system after system swing through, making for unreliable wind. You can read the NWS forecast if you’d like.
Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those beaches for the next three days.
Thursday, which is a long ways out and therefore suffers from long-range-itis, looks light-and-variable early with west wind at 26-30 east of Hood River in the afternoon. It’s actually a pretty decent setup, assuming nothing changes: low pressure system moving inland with strong high pressure building off the coast. Another factor in Thursday’s favor is that I have a very full calendar that day – that always increases the chances of good wind. Add “windsurfing” or “kiting” to your Thursday calendar, just in case.

Random Morning Thoughts
I had a dream last night that I was driving up the Crystal Mountain access road (it’s steep and winding) early in the season before the resort had opened. The sun was glaring off the shite, snow-covered road, and my tires were making that cold-snow squaky noise. Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have snow tires on my car. I almost turned around, and then I reminded myself of two things: One, my tires were gripping just fine. Two, I had chains in the back seat.
So, I continued up the road, and arrived at the resort. Lots of people were hiking and skiing and snowboarding. I was super excited, and the people around me, while not as excited, at least understood my enthusiasm.
We don’t all come into this world with the right tires for the conditions under our wheels. We have to learn to drive using what we’re given. Somehow we need to find the faith and the trust that our tires will grip the road. Sometimes that’s good enough. Occasionally we’ll need to find some gravel for the road or chains for the tires. Once in a while we may need to call in a tow truck.
But rest assured… even if your tires slip once in a while, they’ll eventually grip the road again. You may just need to pull over for a bit and wait for help to come along. And if you find yourself in the right crowd of people, you’ll be surrounded by people who understand the road you’ve driven and support your approach to happiness. Why? Because you’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. That’s what my cat thinks about the weather. I think it’s a lot more interesting than that! Outside my window as I write this, the sky is pink and purple and Mt. Adams is fully lit with Alpenglow. (the Germans sure do come up with cool words, don’t they?) Today is starting off beautiful, and it’s also starting with the first full Nothing of the season. In case you’re new to this, the Nothing is that big grey cloud that sits over the Gorge in the winter when Portland and Mt. Hood are sunny.
Anyway, you can expect Nothing this morning and sunshine with high clouds this afternoon. Or maybe the sunshine will disappear behind those high clouds. Anyway, temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. Tomorrow starts off with a cold front and showers with temps in the mid 40’s. We’ll see a break in the rain during the afternoon, followed by heavier rain overnight. Light wind, 93% chance of rainbows.
Thursday starts off with either a few sprinkles or Nothing and clears up in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 14% chance of rainbows.
The weekend forecast depends on the eventual track of your best friend the Pineapple Express, also known as the Atmospheric River. As of right now, models say we’ll get clipped by the southern edge of it. Things could change. We could get nailed. We could sneak by to the south. Stay tuned for details!

Road and Mountain Biking
I didn’t get a chance to check out Post Canyon before school yesterday. I suspect it was a bit slick. But today, well, I bet you’ll find tacky dirt in Post, on Whoopdee, at Syncline, on Hospital, and at the 44 Road trails. Mountain biking would be a good call today. Road biking will be nicer this afternoon after the Nothing dissipates. You will find some east wind. Tomorrow morning looks good before noon, when the rain will start. Thursday afternoon looks good too.

Upcoming Events
Happy Tuesday. There’s a Full Moon Run on the Twin Tunnels tonight at 6pm to benefit HRVMS’s PE department in their attempt to build a community workout space. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina tonight. I have 6pm, but I suspect they’ve moved it up to 5:30 by now due to fading daylight. There’s Zumba at 6:30 (free) at the Mt. Hood Community Center, community yoga at 7pm at the Mosier Senior Center, and meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 (the monks are out of town, but the meditators will still be there). There’s another community meditation at 8:15am tomorrow at Flow.
As I mentioned yesterday, the only thing I have on my calendar this weekend is a work party at Cooks Meadow trail on Sunday. Hopefully the weather cooperates. But… weather or not…
Have an awesome day today!
