Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! If you’ve been looking for a day on the windier side of windy, today’s your day! If that’s not your thing, we’ll have west wind, lesser west wind, all week long. Next chance for a day on the windier end of the spectrum is Friday. Temps will be in the low to mid 70s, so choose your wetsuit accordingly and maybe bring a hoodie for the beach.

Tuesday opens up with pressures of 29.89/29.76/29.71 for gradients of 0.13/0.05. Little fluffy marine clouds were hovering over Hood River with deeper clouds to the west. Clouds will increase today and eventually completely fill in past Hood River. This should nudge you eastward too! It’s worth noting that models do not have a handle on the timing of an incoming system today (nope, not even with it being just a few hours out!) so there’s going to be some broad-brushing here. Let’s start with the easy part: by late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 29-32 from Avery to Arlington. Periods of 32-35 are possible near Rufus and also Arlington. Threemile joins in mid-afternoon at 29-32, and Boardman fills in with 27-30. Trickier to predict: the Rowena stretch. Lyle to Doug’s will probably see a period of 27-30+ prior to clouds filling in to The Dalles. So, that’s an option. The timing of those incoming clouds is unclear. Pun intended! Hardest part of the forecast is areas west of Lyle. A period of very gusty 21-24+ from Swell to Mosier (especially at Mosier) is possible this morning before clouds increase and the wind decreases. Viento, over-performing ahead of a frontal passage as usual, started the day at 30mph. It’ll probably hold until the clouds really push in this afternoon. Stevenson: 12-15 to start, probably building to gusty 20ish, and then fading as the clouds deepen. River flow over the last 24 hours was 61-87kcfs, river temp is 67.82F, and high temp forecast is 65F for Hood River and 73F for Arlington.

We’ll be in a post-frontal environment on Wednesday. Tuesday’s system heads south to California, high pressure rebuilds offshore, marine clouds start the day in Hood River, and desert heating lends a hand. Focus: Corridor. We start the day with 13-16 from Viento to Boardman with 5-10 at cloudy Stevenson. Late morning wind builds to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon: 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 17-20 at Rufus. High temp: 71F.

Venmo

Thursday looks very similar to Wednesday in terms of wind strength, but a system approaching offshore will make the wind a bit gustier. We start with 17-20 from Viento to Hood River, builds to 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River, and finish with 21-24 from Mosier to Avery with 17-20 west of Mosier and 17-20 at Rufus. High temp: 73F.

Extended: we start to see more range in the predictions from Friday onward. In an interesting twist, the Euro ensembles have mid-20s or better east of The Dalles on Friday, but the GFS deterministic focuses the strongest wind near Swell. Either way, 22-25mph is the current forecast. Saturday: upper teens to low 20s. Beyond that, there’s just too much range to make any sort of reliable prediction. Have a great day on the river today!
