Although there’s a bit of wind on the river this morning, it’s not going to last all that long today; building high pressure will flatten the gradients by early afternoon. You can expect Dawn Patrol at 13-16 from Viento to Doug’s with 10-13 further east. Get it right now, because it will be gone quickly, allowing you to do other things like flat-water paddling, fishing, and road biking. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow starts off with east wind. We may see a short period of 20-23 at Rooster, but most likely we’re looking at a peak of 15-18 there with less at Stevenson. What easterlies we do get will be gone by midday, to be replaced by westerlies at 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon. Those afternoon westerlies will be driven by an approaching weather system, so expect them to be gusty and up and down.
Thursday starts off with west wind at 10-13. High pressure building inland may shut the wind down, and it may not. Depends on what time the high pressure builds. If it waits a bit, we may even see a period of 13-16 midday. Thursday looks like another round of teen-strength west wind.

Random Morning Thoughts
Back to Martin Buber and his 1923 book I and Thou… I’m about halfway through it, and still in love. Buber, writing in the 1920’s, speaks to something we modern-day people struggle with: the relationship between our government and us.
Through using the Google this morning, I was able to find that public trust in government, depending on the poll, is somewhere between 14% and 24%. Imagine for a moment a human you don’t trust. That feeling you generated, that’s how most of us feel about our government.
Our government has a fair bit of power to impact our lives: financial security, healthcare, laws affecting our right to get married, own certain objects, and possess substances that impact our minds. In some ways, government functions as our meta-parents, keeping society from devolving into meta-chaos. If 86% of us didn’t trust our real parents, we’d say that something was drastically wrong with society. I argue that something is drastically wrong when 86% of us don’t trust government.
How did this happen? Buber, in 1923, posits that government was treating people as objects (I/it relationship) rather than as people (I/thou). I, here in 2015, agree. We have reached a point where we personify things that have no capability to exist in relationship (corporations) while minimizing the rights of people (voter suppression*). Our government has lost the capacity for empathy with the poor, the middle class, students, and entrepreneurs. Instead of having a heart, our government is living through logic. And so we have no trust, because logic isn’t warm, logic doesn’t create a relationship, and logic discounts our humanity.
I do not know how we change this. I do know that it needs to change. We need politicians with hearts. All we can do is seek them out and vote for them, I guess.
*There were 31 cases of voter fraud in one billion ballots cast. And yet, we are making it much more difficult for people to vote. Why?

I received a report yesterday that the upper section of Post is a bit on the puddly side (thanks, Steve), but I bet the lower section is pretty good. The Hospital Hill report (thanks, Tonia) is that it’s dry as a bone. Oh what a difference a state line and 5 miles makes. It sounds like the HRATS may have some sort of work party in the works for this weekend. Stay tuned.
