Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)
Unstable weather and hard-to-predict conditions continue for another couple of days here in the Gorge. On top of that, models aren’t showing much consistency from day to day, making it hard to plan ahead. Today started off with light wind in the single digits with gradients of .06 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .43 (eph-dls). Models are underpredicting the gradients, leaving me to believe we’ll see westerlies at 10-13 for much of the day with a late-day jump to 13-16. The strongest, most reliable wind will be from Stevenson to Hood River today, with the possibility of the Rowena stretch joining in late. That evening session could be hampered by thunderstorms.
As of yesterday, tomorrow looked like a nuker. That forecast has shifted, as an upper level low (ULL) hangs out off the coast. Expect 15-18 from Swell to Arlington tomorrow morning. The wind may increase slightly midday, but we won’t see a real jump until after 2pm. At that point, the wind will pick up to 24-28 from Lyle to Rufus, possibly at Arlington too. Thunderstorms will be a problem again tomorrow out in the desert, so it may not be worth making a long drive.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.
Thursday sees the ULL begin to move onshore, and that will increase the gradients and the wind. Expect 23-26 to start, probably from Mosier to Doug’s. The mid-twenties wind will continue for much of the day before picking up to 28-32 from Lyle to Arlington mid-afternoon. It’s hard to say what will happen from Stevenson to Hood River on Thursday; it depends on how deep the marine clouds push. My best guess is the clouds will make it past HR, leaving the western Gorge with gusty westerlies at 12-15. As of this morning, Friday looks like 26-30.
Coast (north/central/south). Today, 10-15/5-10/LTV, W swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Tomorrow: LTV, NW 4 @ 8. Thursday: light S, NW 5 @ 8.
Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 16-19. Jones tomorrow, 12-15. Jones Thursday, 21-24. Sauvie’s today, 10-13. Sauvie’s tomorrow, light. Sauvie’s Thursday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts
I struggle sometimes with having advertising on this report. It frustrates me to pay for something (the New York Times online) for example, and then have ads in my face too. I know that’s normal business practice, but I find it annoying.
Anyway, I also like letting people know about cool local businesses, and so I allow ads. Sometimes this gets complicated – this is a small town after all. One specific situation is sushi. Yes, sushi. One of my favorite things on the planet. Sushi Okalani (yum) advertises with me, and the owner, Justin, has picked me up hitchhiking before (so you know he’s a good dude!). The owner of Kaze, Toshi, is my friend. Both these cool dudes want me to spread the word about their restaurants.
I’m not gonna pick favorites here. I can tell you that Kaze just reopened after being closed for several months, and they have the best Mabo Ramen EVER. Sushi Okalani is a perennial HR favorite (they’ve been open for 10 years, for goodness sake!)
Here is my suggestion: we have two Japanese restaurants again. It’s time to double your sushi and ramen consumption. That’s clearly the only answer to this horrible dilemma. Now please, would someone please open an Indian restaurant here…
Gorge Weather Forecast
Last night’s sunset was a 10 out of 10, and included a rainbow! Here’s hoping you saw it! If not, don’t worry: we have the potential for awesome sunrises and sunsets for a few more days as an offshore low keeps those convective clouds firing up each afternoon. Expect a partly cloudy and muggy day today with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 90’s this afternoon. Light wind. Darn good chance of thunder in the evening. 23% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow starts partly cloudy with a colorful sunrise and temps in the mid 60’s and ends with a colorful sunset, chance of thunder, and temps in the upper 80’s. Moderate wind, 14% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly cloudy with temps in the mid 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 17% chance of rainbows.
