Tuesday: still hot, but plenty windy!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A three-day period of stronger westerlies kicks off today; morning gradients were .11 and .01, offshore high pressure was raring to go, and a heat low was forecast for the desert. With high temps forecast for the mid 90’s today, you’ll be stoked to be in the water! Expect early morning westerlies at 16-19 from Viento to Hood river with 10-13 in other locations. We’ll see 22-25 from Viento to Doug’s by midday. Westerlies keep building, maxing out at 25-28 from Viento to Rufus with 23-26 at Stevenson and 20-23 at Arlington. Don’t be surprised if the Swell region falls off mid-afternoon as the metro area heats up. River flow is 173kcfs and temp is 67 degrees.

Marine influence and cooler air arrives Wednesday night and sets us up for a very windy Wednesday. As we discussed yesterday, this is almost, but not quite, the cooldown scenario we’ve been looking for. It’ll be good enough, for sure. Your dawn patrol session starts at 21-25 at Viento and Mosier with gusty 17-21 in other locations between Stevenson and The dalles. Westerlies build to 28-32 from Viento to Doug’s by late morning. East of there, you’ll find 18-23 for the mornign session. Stevenson (24-27) and areas east of The Dalles join in with 28-32 by the afternoon.

Deeper marine clouds force their way into the Gorge on Thursday for another round of strong westerlies. It’ll take a bit longer for the clouds to burn off in the west, so you may want to head east. The day starts with gusty 19-23 in the west and 25-28 from Mosier eastward. Westerlies eventually climb to the 27-31 range (perhaps more from Rowena to Rufus) anywhere the sun comes out.

Long-range, not particularly accurate or precise forecast: 27-30 for Friday. 20-23 for Saturday. 15-18 for Sunday. Kiteboard and windsurf instructors may get a break during the middle of next week if the next hot spell plays out as forecast.

Friendly reminder: the Port of Hood River is reducing parking at the Event Site due to lack of social distancing by patrons – you, for example. They’ve also closed the Nichols Boat Basin dock. The Event Site will close for an hour when full (no overflow in Lot 1 now), and will open when there are 15 spots available. If users cannot maintain social distancing and/or wear masks, more drastic steps may have to be taken. So, take this seriously, or risk losing access for everyone.

Statement on Racial Justice

Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems. In June, I donated 10% of the income from this forecast to the National Black Justice Coalition. I encourage you to find a cause and contribute too. Don’t have financial resources? Speak up!

I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.

I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Have an awesome day!
