Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Tuesday, and today is the last sunny day on Mt. Hood for a while. If you would prefer packed powder to corn snow, you’ll probably like this forecast. The chance of a big powder day is about 50/50 at this point – models disagree – but we’re definitely headed back into winter.

For Tuesday, you’ll have sunshine all day along with afternoon corn snow. The free air freezing level will be 0-2000′ in the morning (depends on location), 5000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. W or NW wind at 10mph.

Wednesday looks warmer, and models disagree on exactly what sort of precip we’ll see. My best guess is rain or snain (non-accumulating snow) during the day and snow after midnight. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 6000′ from late morning on, 5000′ around midnight, and 4000′ Thursday morning. Models also disagree on precip amounts. Let’s call it .1-.2” water value (WV) during the day that falls as rain or mixed precip. Another .3-.5” WV falls overnight, about half as mixed precip and half as 1-2” of new snow. Wind will be S 10 early, SSW 15 in the afternoon, and SSW 25 overnight.

Thursday starts off snowy, turns partly cloudy, and then sees flurries overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ after 8pm. About .3” WV falls during the day, for about 3” of new snow. An additional inch or so of snow falls overnight. Wind will be in the S or SW 20-25 range all day.

The broad-brush picture for Friday through Sunday is continued snowfall with model disagreement on amounts: a few inches Friday, several inches Saturday, and maybe/maybe not for significant snowfall Sunday. Guess we’ll have to wait until we get closer to the weekend to see how things play out!

Random Morning Thoughts

Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we forget about the basics. For example, work, school, our children, our partner, and our leisure activities can cause us to neglect important things. Sleep, for example, often gets set aside in favor of other responsibilities.

However, without sleep, we can’t function at our best. And over time, lack of sleep will impact our mental and physical health. You can prove this to yourself by listening to your body. If it’s craving sleep, it’s telling you that it needs sleep.

Bodies are very smart. They function as an early warning system. When we stay attuned to them, we can catch stressors before they spiral out of control. Bodily tension and tiredness are two common signs that we need to slow down and practice a bit of self-care.

Have you been listening to your body? Stop a moment and check in right now. What’s there? What’s it telling you? Do you trust it? May you and your body live in harmony. May you be healthy. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Tuesday, there will be light and variable wind in the morning. After noon, the wind will pick up to W 5. Wednesday looks calm all day, not necessarily in your head, but definitely on the river. Thursday starts with W 10-13 pretty much everywhere. As an upper low moves into the desert, we’ll see gusty 26-30 from Mosier (or maybe Rowena) eastward to Arlington. Best bet will probably be Avery to Rufus.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a lovely clear morning out there, and today will be sunny. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and near 60 later. Light wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts cloudy, turns sprinkly quickly, and becomes very rainy after 5pm. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Calm wind. 14% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks rainy with snow possible overnight, especially above 500′ Temps will be near 40 in the morning and near 50 in the afternoon. Steady rain for much of the day (break mid-morning, perhaps) gives way to showers in the evening and overnight. 1-2” snow above 500′ after midnight, especially north of the Columbia. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Generally speaking, Friday, Saturday and Sunday look similar to Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m guessing the dirt is fantastic right now, at least at lower elevations. However, the temps did drop well below freezing again last night, meaning there will be freeze thaw above 500′ or so today. If you ride, it’s quite likely you will do significant trail damage. So, wait until late afternoon so the trails can dry out, or do a road ride today instead. It should be awesome with temps near 60. If you want to give back to trails, there’s a work party on 3/24 at 9:30am meeting at the bottom of Mitchell Ridge.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Tuesday, there’s by-donation moving meditation at Trinity at 6:15. There’s a free meditation/breathing class at Flow at 8am. There a free yoga class at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There are two evening by-donation events: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.

Looking ahead to the weekend, there’s a ski mountaineering race on Saturday at Timberline, there’s a CGWA Hatchery work party, and there’s an HRATS work party on Mitchell Ridge. The Wheatfield Half Marathon is Sunday in The Dalles.
