Mt. Hood is doing its spring thing right now, with big temperature differences across small changes in elevation. When I last looked, it was 38 degrees at 5000′ and 28 degrees at 7300′. That’s neat, but doesn’t really tell you much about what’ll happen today, now does it? No, I didn’t think so! We’re going to see a mostly cloudy day today with occasional light flurries mixed with sunshine during the day. We’ll see steadier snow after 7pm. The snow level today will be around 3500′ by mid-morning, rising to 5000′ this afternoon. We won’t see any accumulation during the day, but we’ll see .2-.4” water value (WV) tonight. That’ll give us 2-3” of dense new snow. Wind today will be W 30 early, dropping to SW 10-15 this afternoon and evening. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We’re seeing moderate westerlies to start the day (Tuesday) here in the Gorge, but it’s cloudy. So, if you were hoping to escape the clouds in Portland by coming out here and getting on the river, you’ll have to wait a bit. It’s actually cloudy all the way to Arlington! It’s not an ideal day to chase wind – two weak weather systems move through during the day, and that’ll make the wind pretty unreliable. Anyway, we have west gradients at 7am of .06 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). The river water temp is 51 degrees. We’ll see up-and-down, gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier for much of the day, fading to W 10-13 or less after 2pm. Beaches east of Mosier – Rowena through Arlington – will see 15-18 for the first half of the morning and gusty 22-25 from late morning through mid-afternoon. Models suggest the wind will be all wrapped up by 5pm, leaving us with W 10-13 or less everywhere after 5pm.
Wednesday looks pretty useless for wind sports and pretty awesome if you’re looking for no wind at all. An upper level low off the coast turns off the gradient machine, leaving us in the dolrums for the day. Expect W 5 or so in the morning and E 5 or so in the afternoon. Light wind, in other words.
That low pressure system moves inland on Thursday morning. High pressure builds over the Pacific in the wake of the low’s departure. That leaves us with a better setup for Gorge wind. The day starts off with W 5-10. As the low moves inland, we’ll see the westerlies pick up to 13-16 by midday from Stevenson to Maryhill. By mid afternoon, we should have 23-26 from Stevenson to Maryhill. As of right now, it doesn’t look like the far east Gorge will get involved, but that could change. Also, if the low is delayed moving inland, the wind will also be delayed. Friday currently looks like 24-27, the weekend looks light, and in dreamland, Monday looks like W 35-40. That’s a long, long ways out to be predicting!
Random Morning Thoughts
As we move through our lives, or are carried along by our lives, we find ourselves moving in and out of various emotional states and self states. By self states, I mean that we’re functioning from a limited viewpoint without being fully aware and in connection with our truth. It’s a hard thing to describe directly; it’s easier to describe a self-state by its absence.
Every once in a while (or often for the lucky few), we operate from a calm, peaceful, grounded place of assurance and confidence. This can happen even when there’s chaos and pain happening around us. This is, I think, our best self. For most people, it’s rare to be able to maintain this on a continuous basis.
It is possible, however, to cultivate this best self so it arises naturally more often. It’s also possible, I think, to bookmark this best self so you can find it when you fall out of it. How do you do that? When you’re feeling at your best, take some time to stop and notice. How does this self manifest in your body? Do you feel warm, strong, relaxed, solid? Does that self have a color? A texture? A certain kind of energy? (for me, it’s silver, with my age stamped into it, and it feels like Icy-Hot) Whatever you find, spend some time really studying it. See where it lives in you, and memorize that.
If you study it hard, you’ll be able to find it later. You’ll be able to call it up later when you need it. It might not work perfectly, but it might just help when times get rough. And someday, if you do the work, that best self will become your dominant you. May you be well. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s cloudy out there this morning, a nice change from all that horrible, awful, nasty sunshine we’ve seen over the last week or two. It’ll be so nice to have my tan lines fade away over the next few days. I’m sure you’re thinking exactly the same thing! Anyway, expect a cloudy start with sunbreaks during the middle part of the day. We’ll see rain this evening, continuing overnight. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. 9% chance of rainbows.
Wednesday looks partly to mostly cloudy. We’ll see scattered sprinkles during the day with steadier rain after noon, continuing on-and-off through the night. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 24% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks mostly dry with a chance of convective showers in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 19% chance of rainbows. Friday, Saturday and Sunday look dry and warmer.

Road and Mountain Biking
The word from Post Canyon is that there’s still some snow on the trails way up high, but you can ride, because there are moto tracks down to the dirt through the snow. I don’t know if you can drive to the top to shuttle. If it’s driveable, it’s also rideable, meaning you could ride your road bike to Kingsley for a sufferfest. Looks like we’ll see some rain over the next few days, and that’ll give our rather dry trails a return to tackiness. Other than that, NO DOGS on Hospital Hill. Mobius is open. The flowers are out on Whoopdee. In road biking news, the Hood River Valley is is bloom, so get on your road bike. It’ll be light wind on Wednesday and Thursday, so thems the best days!
